could this mole be cancerous?
sorry, no picture but i have become worried when i noticed a mole on the left side of my neck today...i am fair skinned, and have had the mole all my life and im 18 now...it is raised, and from what i can see symmetrical...the center is a dark brown while the outside is lighter, and it is clear that the center is much darker...it is a tad bit smaller then a pencil eraser..im going to the dermatoligist in about 2 weeks, do i have anything to worry about in the meantime? i cant stop thinking about it could it be a sign of melanoma? doctor advice would be appreciated

My little sister had a dark brown birthmark on her neck too. It's also about the size of a pencil eraser.
She had to get it removed in a surgery because it's been known that dark birthmarks like that can cause cancer in the future.
My sister's friend had her birthmark removed too
Go see a doctor and ask about this.

do the abc test
is it an even shape (yes no cancer)
are the borders even or ragged (No no cancer
Color even (yes then no cancer)
yours has a strange color so he may have to remove it
but it is not Melanoma
Melanoma is usually in a flat area and this is just a mole you had all your life
do not worry
If I were you I would be more worried about how much it hurts when they remove the mole (it burns)

That sort of sounds what my step dad had on the back of his neck. He went to the doc to get it hacked off and tested. It did turn out to be cancer but it did not spread. That was good news. But get it checked out.

That doesn't always mean its cancerous, if it's symmetric usually you don't have naything to worry about. The checkup is two weeks away, don't let those two weeks waste away by having you worry constantly. You'll lose sleep etc, and it could turn out to be just fine. Don't worry. :]

I wouldn't worry. Melanoma is asymmetrical. Google it.

its not cancerous you have to do is stay out of the sun

it could be, its very possible in this case that the mole your describing could be cancerous

The only way to know for sure is to go to a doctor and have them take a tissue sample and test it.

if it is multi-colored then it may be cancerous.

more than likely it's nothing. if the doc suspects that it's anything, they will remove it right there in the office during your appointment. they'll get it tested, and you'll know if it was anything in about 2 weeks.

it is unlikely that it is cancerous but of course only a doctor who can actually see it can know. Any mole is considered cancerous with out testing. But then again, never assume..

good luck.

If it gets inflamed, gets itchy or starts getting bigger, see a GP immediately.
Apart from that it should be OK, I've had one on my arm for 50+ years with no change.

First of all, I know its hard to stop but try and stop worrying and obsessing over it, you are going to the doctor and will be in good hands. In the mean time, there really isn't anything you can do, so try not to worry yourself sick over what you have no control over.
Does the mole look different from how it normally looks? You also must keep in mind the "ABCs" when getting clues as to whether it might be cancerous
A:asymmetry- is it asymmetrical
B:border-is the border irregular
C:color- any change in color, or abnormal coloring
D:diameter-is it larger than 6mm in diameter
these are potential cancer signs. in the mean time try to relax and hang in there. Good luck!

If you're not sure, get it checked.
Always get it checked, and your doctor might recommend getting it removed just to be safe.

Some unorthodox answers here.

Keep the appointment and when you get there, have the doctor do a "skin check"--this means strip down to your birthday suit (wearing a gown obviously) and you will be looked from head to toes (and between toes and everything else, too).

The one on your neck, if he feels that it can be "atypical nevus" (abnormal mole) or out right melanoma, it can be easily removed and biopsied (sent to the lab to have a dermopathologist exams it under a microscope.) You may have to return for the procedure (which takes just a few minutes to do).

If you get nervous about it--take heart. He will clean the skin and inject a tiny amount of lidocaine (the nummy stuff) to .. numb it. It stings for a second or two, and that's it. He then 'shave' it off or "punch" it off (depending on how "deep" it is). Or he may "excise" it off all together to make sure the "margins" are clear.

Be sure to make a follow up appointment so you can see him in person when he explains how it turned out.

No matter what it is, there are always treatments available.

Keep in mind that if this turns out to be totally benign (not cancer), stay out of the sun and use decent sunscreen all year round always.

You are going to the right place. Just hang in there till he looks at it.

Has it undergone changes recently to cause you to worry? I wouldn't worry if I were you.

The guidelines to use when checking and tracking moles are...

A stands for asymmetry.
One half of the mole doesn't match the other half. Melanoma tend to be irregular.

B stands for border irregularity.
Benign (good) moles have nice smooth edges whereas melanoma are busily invading and tend to have irregular edges.

C stands for color.
If the color is intensely black, possibly with a bluish tint, or the color is uneven across the mole, this is suspicious of a melanoma.

D stand for diameter
if the mole is greater than 6 mm (about the size of a pea), then there is a greater chance that it is malignant.

It doesn't sound like you have any of the signs.
