Should we avoid looking at the sun for just 1 second?
My little nephew asked if he should avoid looking at the sun for just 1 second.

1 second wouldn't hurt, just don't look at it for too long.

Dharma Lady
"that's where the fun is."

emilio9382
Is there another way that you could word this?

Never try to look into the sun. It hurts, and plus, it's useless. Looking into it just hurts your eyes.

EmilyLady
You mean taking one second to avoid looking at the sun ... or trying to never look at the sun - for even one second?

If it's the latter, then yes - it probably won't do much damage, but it is best to look at the sun as INFREQUENTLY as possible.

ello!
huh? what do you mean? i don't stare at the sun. i don't get it. tell your nephew to speak english and then get back to me.

cedral713
what?

If it is a simple glance over don't worry about it. If he is talking a full second (one Mississippi) tell him he should avoid it.

Staring at the sun can contribute to what they call "floaters" in your eye (those little things you can sometimes see wandering around your eyes that look like little strings) Not to mention blindness in regions of your eye.

If you want to look at the sun safely, take a piece of cardboard and cut a hole in it and hold it above a piece of paper. You can see sunspots and other solar occurrences without burning out your eyes. Just take the rig out on a sunny day and aim the cardboard in the direction of the sun. WITHOUT looking at it.

DO NOT, even with sunglasses, ever stare at the sun! EVER! BAD IDEA!

Punani Monster
1 second turns into 2 seconds to seconds turn into 60 seconds and before you know it your eyes are damaged.

ravivarma
avoid direct look but morning sun is good for health and evening sun too.

mael333ca
yes, it damages, over time, the back of the eye where the optical nerves ending are....i believe

The Don :>
