Mommy To a Sweetheart!
Medical Scenario! Whats wrong with her?
56 year old female
*Shortness of breath, occasional pain between shoulder blades
*Suffers from intermittent heartburn, little relief from antacids
*Post menopausal for 8 years
*Her father & uncle had heart trouble and died in their 50's
*She smokes 1 pack a day
*Rarely has time to exercise

****This is only a scenario. Please do not tell me to call 911. I want to know whats WRONG with her. It's not real!****
Please give a diagnosis and why this could cause her problems
Additional Details
It matters because I am about to start nursing school so I am trying to prepare myself to understand how some of the symptoms relate to different diseases. I do not know anyone that is going through this, and am merely doing it for my own personal knowledge.

COPD most likely.

We are not doctors and therefore cannot give you a diagnosis.

If this is just a scenario, then what difference does it make? It's not real, so why do you need a diagnosis?

IF in fact you DO know someone who is having these symptoms - then they need to get to a doctor NOW !! These symptoms you describe are some of the many things that CAN be symptoms of a heart attack.

heart attack or cancer going crazy or heart deasie or COPD

Is she also over weight? How often does it happen? What is her diet?
Is there any stress in her life?
These are some of the questions a doctor would ask.

Any back pain? What's her blood pressure? Any headaches? Any numbness of the fingers? More questions before a diagnosis could be made.

That is a symptom of a heart attack for a woman. Doctor would probably say it's a wake up call....quit smoking, start exercising, lose the extra weight, take folic acid.

I'm not a doctor, just about that age. So not enough information to say anything other then, a lot of similar heart attack symptoms.

you should go to webmd.com and select your symptoms on the symptom checker, it gives you a list of possibilities, symptoms, cures, causes, treatments, etc...

Smoking has probably not a good thing but, do you know if shes taking any other kind of drugs?

This is a typical question you find throughout medical training. Usually at the bottom of this type of question there will be a list on possible diagnoses and you are asked to select the best option

In this case every piece of information that is provided gives hints about the person having a higher risk for possible coronary artery disease, thereby making this a fairly easy question.

*Active smoking history
*Family history of other family members having cardiac disease early in life.
*Some years past menopause
*Atypical chest pain not relieved with antacid.
*Sedentary lifestyle
*Shortness of breath with activity.

All of these factors contribute to the conclusion that this person has coronary artery disease until proven otherwise.

Main risk factors are heart disease are: high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and family history of early heart disease.

In real life in addition to heart disease you would make a list of other possible problems this could be and order it based on the seriousness of the problem. One by one you would do studies or tests to rule out those possibilities until there is a clear source...or sometimes NOT a clear source but at least you have ruled out the major problems.

On that list includes pulmonary embolism, GERD (esophagus, barrett's esophagus, peptic ulcer), lung cancer, breast cancer, COPD, congestive heart failure and probably a few I am not considering.

I hope this helps. Good luck in your career.
