What are the effects of grinding your teeth when you sleep?
Or is it just a case of sore teeth in the morning?
Additional Details
Spar: Because my mum has told me that I've done it since I was a child, and I wake up a lot with sore teeth!

how do you know if you are ?

You can grind your teeth down so they are short. You can also take off some of the enamel which can lead to increased risk of infection and decay. Also, if you wear or will need to wear a retainer, it may not fit due to the shortness of your back teeth from grinding.

You can buy a mouthguard from most sports stores to wear while you sleep.

you are stressed, you may ask your dentist for a nightguard because otherwise your teeth may be worn the enamel is going and teeth became sensitive
in the last you will need root canal treatment.Don,t worry this is the worst scenario.

some random kid
My dentist says it's not good to do it, it can grind away the enamel which protects your teeth from decaying. So if you don't have much enamel protecting your teeth, your teeth can be sensitive to hot and cold foods. It's no problem for me because i wear retainers from when i had braces. my teeth are nice and straight now:)

Some serious tooth aches !

you can:

-wake up and/or freak out your partner
-chip a tooth (very real threat there)

It's a case of....angriness during sleep.

i do that quite alot too.
I think its because you have a small mouth or alot of teeth.

belladonna aka Deadly nightshade
idont know

my friend does that and she wears her teeth down she now has no canines and there is nothing you can do about it hope this helps

It is called "bruxism". It can make your TMJ hurt too! (TMJ = tempo-mandibular joint). The ball and socket joint that your jaw hinges on.
I can wear the contact surface of your teeth... leading to problems over time.

Sore jaw in the morning, and it can damage the enamel of your teeth.
If you see your dentist he might make you a mouthpiece to wear at night so your teeth don't get as damaged. Or you can just mould your own, buy a mouthguard from the chemist or JJB.
Some things you might want to try that helped me:
- Avoid things like tea, coffee and fizzy drinks before you go to bed. I find that I grind more after a cup of tea because it makes me more stimulated.
- Relax. If, when you're lying in bed, you can feel your jaw tensing, relax it. Try to be aware. (I know this doesn't help much when you're actually sleeping but it's a good start.)

boom boom
Eventually you could wear down your teeth. I used to do it all the time and it turned out that it was caused by my bite being "out". A dentist in the past had put fillings in which had made my teeth become out of natural alignment with each other. When i was stressed or whatever I'd grind my teeth at night and it used to make me feel awful the next day.

Since my fillings were sorted out I don't grind my teeth anymore. However, this may not be the cause for you. Some dentists will advise a gum sheild sort of device but some will say that this makes you grind even more. Ask your dentist if he/she can see any damage to the teeth and ask what the best course of action is.

There can be catastrophic effects from night grinding. You need to have a dentist make you a night guard (hard plastic, NEVER soft rubber) as soon as possible.

Teeth rest in the bone with a 'fluid' around them so they can move slightly without breaking themselves or the bone. It's like a natural shock absorber. When teeth are chronically moved, the bone surrounding the teeth can begin to deteriorate. This movement can also cause a slight divet or indentation at the gumline where the tooth will begin to errode, causing an increase risk of decay and sensitivity.

The fact that the teeth are sensitive mean that the pulp inside the teeth are telling you there is a problem. There is evidence that pulp tissue (the nerve inside the tooth) can actually die from chronic trauma, resulting in the need for a root canal in extreme cases.

The joint can become fatigued and traumatized.

The worst problem, besides chronic headaches and facial and neck tension, that results from clenching and grinding comes after many years of wear on the surface enamel of the teeth. The height of the teeth become reduced from wear, this changes the way your teeth fit together, which eventually leads to fracturing, especially on the front teeth. Then... one day... you need every single tooth in your head crowned (seriously) in order to regain the original function... or dentures.

Wouldn't it be easier to grind away a plastic night guard and protect your teeth from damage? Besides, it will make you feel better in the morning.
