Generally benign means its not cancerous, and i dont think that doctors would use radiation to get rid of it, probably just surgery..
but im not a doctor so dont pay attention to me. |

Hi,
Take a few minutes and compare yourself to Dave. When he got chemo, his hair fell out, but he is surviving today.

He went from being wheelchair bound to walking with a cane over about 2 months. He does not need his cane anymore. |

I don't think radiation treatment makes your hair fall out. That is chemo. I'm very sorry to hear about this. It will be easier is you have a support system.
If you don't have family and friends go online. Infact I had family and friends when my mom had breast cancer, yet I still went online. They were a huge help. They understood what I was going through and helped me to understand what she was going through because they had been there. Try the source. They have several different support groups. Also try looking at yahoo's groups. That was where my support group was.
Best of luck. |

Firstly if it is benign you will not need to have radiation!!!
Secondly my uncle has brain tumour. It has returned for the third time and he has undergone radiation several times to try and remove it. At the moment it is benign and as his treatment has stopped his hair has began to grow back!!
So my answer is, yes if you have to under go radiation treatment for a brain tumor, you will loose your hair! Cancer doesnt make you hair fall out its the treatment that does!! |

I am sorry to hear about your illness. Radiation will not make your hair fall out. It's chemotherapy which causes that. I should think you will need some support, but there should be some charities to help you to find out all you need to know. I wish you the best of luck. |

Is your tumor in an inoperable area of your brain? I had a brain tumor resected and am going through radiation and chemo (pills) at the same time.Radiation is just like an xray, but the beams are broken up into individual rays. I have a plastic mask molded to my face because you can't move and have the radiation hit in the wrong spot. I just lay there and close my eyes. It takes about 5 minutes for my treatment. My hair is falling out in the area that the radiation goes in and the different areas where it comes out the other side and on top of my head. I was in the waiting room last night and there was a little old man waiting for his turn. He was NOT on chemo, just radiation and his hair was falling out also. It's always good to have someone you can talk to and vent with.
Actually Hope, a benign tumor will continue to grow until it kills you, so yes, you will need radiation to shrink it at least if it's inoperable, or surgery to remove it. |

cancer doesn't make hair fall out!
getting chemotherapy makes your hair fall out. since you're not getting chemo, your hair will stay. |

I hope it all goes well and will wish for the best!
Good luck. |

I have to answer just because all the above answers are really fustrating me! Cancer does not make your hair fall out, cytotoxic chemotherapy does. Chemotherapy is based on chemicals which are injected into the blood. They work by destroying any cells which are dividing at a high rate- mostly cancer cells, but also vulnerable are hair cells, bone marrow and mucosal cells of the GI tract (causing hair loss, risk of infection and nausea/vomiting respectively)
If you are having radiotherapy to the skull your hair will be fine and hopefully it will shrink this tumour for you. Radiotherapy is just like strong xrays. It can cause some skin burning and the mask they'll put on your face is a bit claustophobic, you'll also be more at risk from skin cancer afterwards so wear plenty of sunscreen on your face.
Hope all turns out well. |
