Uses
Avodart is used to shrink an enlarged prostate in men with a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia. Avodart works by lowering the amount of the hormone responsible for prostate growth (dihydrotestosterone). Dutasteride reduces urinary blockage and improves urine flow. Avodart should not be used in women and children.

Storage

Store at room temperature at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
Brief storage between 59 to 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) is permitted.
Do not store in the bathroom.
Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
Dutasteride capsules may soften and leak if stored at high temperatures.
If your capsules crack and leak, do not use them.
Contact your pharmacist.
If your skin comes in contact with the leaking capsules, wash the area immediately with soap and water.

Overdose

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

How To Use

Take Avodart by mouth once daily, with or without food.
Swallow the medication whole.
Use Avodart regularly in order to get the most benefit from it.
To help you remember, use it at the same time each day.
It may take 3 to 6 months before you notice an improvement of your symptoms.
Read the Patient Information Leaflet available from your pharmacist.

Side Effects

Infrequently, sexual problems (e.g., impotence, decreased interest in sex, decrease in the amount of ejaculate) may occur, but then go away as your body adjusts to Avodart.
Avodart may also cause breast enlargement and/or tenderness.
If any of these effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
An allergic reaction to Avodart is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs.
Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing.
If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions

Before using Avodart, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: liver disease, urinary tract disease, prostate cancer, any allergies.
Men taking Avodart should not donate blood until at least 6 months after they stop taking dutasteride to prevent exposure through a blood transfusion to a pregnant female.
Avodart should not be used in women or children.
Since Avodart can be absorbed through the skin, women who are pregnant or capable of becoming pregnant should not handle Avodart.
Any contact with Avodart by a male fetus could result in abnormal male sex organ development.
It is not known whether Avodart passes into breast milk.
However, Avodart should not be used in women.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember.
If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
Do not double the dose to catch up.

Drug Interactions

Before using Avodart, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription products you may use.
Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Avodart can affect the results of the blood test used to detect prostate cancer (PSA).
Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctors know you use Avodart.
