Why do i feel so depressed all of a sudden?
For the past 2 weeks I have been so depressed i get up out of bed saying i hate my life and sometimes wish someone would shoot me. I cry many times a day and i sometimes dont know why. Maybe for 2 or 3 days I have a really good mood and i feel great about myself but then it eventually goes downhill. Im not really sure why I feel like this; Im starting to drift away from my best friend but this has happened before and ive never felt this depressed before. What can I do? Ive started smoking cigarettes again after a 1.5 month break. i dont know if that has anything to do with it and im 16... dont tell me how bad it is for my health i know... is it possible that cigarettes have something to do with being really depressed?

Smoking can cause depression and depression can cause smoking. What got you to start smoking? Were you stressed by school or relationships with your family and friends? If you were depressed before smoking, you need to find healthy ways to cope with the stress in your life. Approach your school's guidance counselor for help, so he/she can guide you to quit smoking and find a way to solve the problems you are facing. Smoking can cause depression or worsen it, if you were already depressed before you started smoking. Cigarettes contain nicotine which is a drug. You are addicted to smoking; you have psychological and emotional dependence on cigarettes. Smoking makes you feel better, thus when you are not smoking, you begin to feel depressed because you are not on the drug. This may explain why you have been depressed for the past 2 weeks. Yes, withdrawal from cigarettes can cause mood swings. Like you said, you'd have a really good mood and feel great about yourself but your mood eventually goes downhill. Your brain is dependent on nicotine, and when you stop smoking for a while, it disrupts the emotional part of your brain, causing problems with your brain's release of a chemical called endorphins. Endorphins eliminate stress and painful emotions, and induce positive feelings. So yeah, the mood swings you are experiencing is part of your withdrawal from smoking. Read up these webpages for more information: http://www.ehow.com/about_5233201_smoking-mood-swings.html http://www.helpguide.org/mental/quit_smoking_cessation.htm Do not smoke again. Hang in there. Continue to quit smoking. Don't give up. Identify the triggers which lead you to smoke; stress, after a meal, cold weather, et cetera. Come up with a list of things to turn to when you have the urge to smoke; exercise, call your best friend, chew on a gum, et cetera. It will be very good for you to have someone physically present to support you as you quit smoking. In the meantime, you may rely on following online support groups: http://www.quitsmokingjournals.com/ http://www.nicotine-anonymous.org/ http://whyquit.com/ Best of luck and take care. Don't give up.
