Blood clots after a nosebleed?
I just had a nosebleed, so obviously this got me curious as to what to do. The nosebleed seems to have stopped on its own now anyway, but I saw a lot of people saying you should pinch your nose just under the bony bit as this causes the blood to clot and stop. I was always told this was bad, strictly because you can get a blood clot and that holding your head back was the right thing to do. How is making your blood clot good? I was always under the impression that this was bad.

Lily
pinching your nose under the boney bit is correct and also leaning forward. If your blood didn't clot you would bleed to death, clotting causes the bleeding to stop. A blod clot in an artery like the heart is bad because this stops the blood reaching the heart this is a different type of clot.

london_gal_kat_x
leaning forward is actually better, and you need your blood to clot, otherwise it wouldnt stop, thats how bleeding anywhere stops, the blood clots.

hairy_spaghetti
don't hold your head back as the blood can go into your throat and you can choke. Lean forwards, over tissue or a sink or something to catch the drips (sorry!). The blood will clot in your nose, by clot it just becomes slightly thicker and stops flowing freely and causing you embarassment! If you sneeze you may find a bit of blood comes out, when you blow your nose you may have some red or bloody bogeys (sorry again!) but this is perfectly fine. Don't panic at the word clot!
