Terri B | Never ending rash on toddler? |
My daughter is 2 and for the past couple of months she has had a rash on her bottom. She is potty trained except for diapers which she wears at night. I took her to the pediatrician, because this rash is not going away. It seems to only appear on her bottom, its red, not raised or bumpy, more like patchy and all over her cheeks. The pediatrician told me it is "dry skin". I suffer from skin problems myself, and I find it hard to believe that this never ending rash is just dry skin. I have not changed my laundry detergent, and I use Aveeno body wash on her. Some days the rash looks like it is going away, then other days it looks terrible. It does not itch or bother her. The Dr. told me to put hydrocortizone cream on it...but this is not helping. When I had first noticed it the nurse at the peds office told me to use an antifungal cream (lotrimin), so I did, and this didn't help either. I'm thinking of taking her into the dermatologist...any other suggestions? My poor baby girl! Additional Details Thank you all for your advise. I'm going to set up an appointment with my dermatologist (he'll be able to see her in a month!) and I think I will try changing her diaper brand. I use LUVS, it's the only thing I've ever used for her...but I'll try anything at this point! I have some yeast infection ointment (Nistatin)...it was prescribed for my daughter about 4 months ago (a little leary of using it). I have eczema so I wouldn't be suprised if she had it as well...it's just such and odd spot...
thank you all again, I'll keep you posted |

If she has been on antibiotics during the last few months, she may have a yeast infection. Just get your Monistat cream and smear it on. If it is yeast, it should show improvement, if it's not, the cream won't hurt her. |

Change your diaper brand to one that keeps the wetness off her and check her at night to see if she is wet and change her. Buy her 100% cotton underwear if you can and make it all white no colors or dyes. Also use a sensitive skin clothes detergent. Try a lotion made just for diaper or bum rashes. There are super lotions out there for dry Skin you can try one and see how it works, stay away from lotions with alcohol in them. I used Gold Bond medicated lotion in the green bottle for my daughter and it worked great, but your daughter may not have a simple rash. See the Derm and get real answers. |

Just some ideas but maybe try letting some air get to it, or changing her brand of diapers and underwear, she could be having a reaction to them. I have a little girl 8 months and she has yet to get any rashes but I bath her every night then when her bottom is water logged I guess LOL I put on a diaper cream or Vaseline then put her diaper on ( I only do this at night) and It works for us.
But I would think if it was laundry soap then her rash would be all over so it has to be something that is touching her bottom like the diapers or underpants.
Well I hope it is not serious and I know how you feel from one parent to the other , Poor baby girl : (
But try some good old air too, it might be hard but it could work !!! |

Maybe your Pediatrician already asked, but:
Has she had anything new to eat or drink? Sometimes even a new flavor of something 'old' will do it.
Any new materials at all; cloth, carpet (had it cleaned?) diaper brand, any medicine or candy or costume stuff?
Really, it sounds like something ingested, being as it's in her pants or contact dermatitis- an allergic reaction. At least it's mild. When thinking what food she might've eaten, temember the spices and such along with all other ingredients. A dermatologist is a good idea. Good luck. |

stop using too much soap, your daughter is not dirty and her clothes needs to be washed sepreately, rub savlon where is infected , everytime she goes potty, after showers and make sure she get's again before the nappy, regular is effective
But it won't go in just seconds, you gotta treat it...
and if that does not work go to dermatologist.
good luck on that advise and hopfully it help your daughter and she becomes well and happy |

Do you live in a hot climate ? I suspect it its
a fungal infection - the anti-fungals such
as canesten, Clotrimazole should clear it up.
Make sure you dry her well after bathing and
avoid anything like Talc powder - Zinc Oxide
based creams are ok so continue to use
these after it clears up. |

My daughter just turned one and she has really bad eczema and we use a couple of different things to help. I'm not saying your daughter has it but if it is "dry Skin" like the doctor says then this should work b/c eczema is basically a really bad case of dry Skin. Was her with Cetaphil wash and use the Cetaphil lotion afterwards. You can buy it at WalMart of just about any drug store. It's kinda pricey, but it helps my daughter tremendously. |

Take her to the dermatologist for sure. I think it sounds like eczema. |

Try Desitin ointment
An old standby |

I would ask him/her if it may be a yeast infection or perhaps a different type of fungal infection . It LOOKS like a rash but requires a different ointment to treat it. Things like Desitin won't touch it. |

Sounds like eczema, which some drs also describe as dry Skin. Nothing gets rid of my son's either, we just don't bath him as often, and use baby soap when we do. Lotion makes it worse, so we just don't use that either. Dry air makes it seem worse too, so we always have humidifiers going in our house.
Dermatologist didn't help us out with it, he just wanted to put steroids on him, which I said no thanks to. It doesn't bother him, although as he's gotten older it has spread and started itching a bit.
I'd take her in, you don't have to do whatever they say, but it would ease your mind to know exactly what it is. Good luck and (hugs) |
