I have coughed so much my ribs hurt, what would cause that? I feel like it's between my ribs.?
Coughing is due to Asthma. What will make it better?
Additional Details
Thanks for everone's help. I had seen my doctor about two weeks ago and I have my inhaler(Albuterol) and he prescribed me some Claritin. The ribs started hurting about three days ago. I will try to cough lighter, if possible. If it doesn't get better in a few more days I will go back to the Doc. You gave me alot to think about. Maybe it HAS turned to Pleurisy. Hope not. Many THX

go to the EMERGENCY ROOM!!! it can Bronchittis,or PHEUMONIA

It could be Pnumomia, when I had it 2 years ago I felt the same way,I ended up in the hospital for 3 weeks, go see a doctor don't wait to long bc I have heard of ppl who have died from it.Who knows it might not be that, either way go see a doctor anyway it could be something bad.

If you are coughing alot, your muscles could be sore. If you have asthma, there are many products available. See your doctor who will give you a prescription.

You may have actually cracked your ribs, go to your doctor and have an xray, it can happen ....Fact..

i hope you dont smoke........

You can actually cough hard to enough to bruise or even brake ribs. Constant coughing and bruise the muscles, and will certainly tire them out.

Make it better? Use you inhaler, and see your doctor.

An asthma pump or try breathing techniques like breathing slowing in through your nose and slowly out through your mouth, this helps me when i have breathing problems. Your ribs are probably hurting because when we cough our lungs expand and put pressure on our rib cage, therefore the more you cough the more chance you have of making your ribs sore!!!

You probably strained your diaphram a bit (it the muscle that controls breathing). It's located just underneath your lungs. If you can, just relax and try not to cough so much so it can rest.

try a cough suppresent that also happens when u laugh a lot.
The coughing actually bruises the rib. I had that once i swear i tjought my ribs were broken I maade the doctor x-ray it 2times

Sir Vix A Lot
I dunno, sounds like it could be an Alien fetus. Wait, that was just a movie. Sorry to scare you. It's just cancer.

Well, there are muscles between your ribs. You have stretched out these tissues through coughing violently. Like any type of muscle sprain you need to rest, take over the counter pain relievers. You need to treat the coughing so that it doesn't continue to reinjure your rib muscles.

Now, it is always possible that you have something else going on, like pleurisy, an inflammation of the lining of the chest. If your pain gets much worse or if it doesn't go away in a day or so then I think you should call your doctor.

Coughing, sneezing and breathing all use muscles in your chest, back and shoulders. These muscles include, but are not limited to, your Diaphragm (runs along the bottom of your rib cage ~ a major breathing muscle), your intercostal muscles (muscles in between your ribs), and multiple other muscles called as a group - accessory muscles - in your chest and back. Prolonged use of any muscle group in the body can cause muscle strain and spasm, the breathing muscles are no different. With prolonged forceful coughing, the intercostal muscles can get strained. They become inflammed and spasm, often spreading the inflammation and spasm to muscles around them. What starts as a twinge in your right chest, becomes a horrendous, searing, "hot poker stabbing" pain radiating around your chest and even into your back. This making breathing, coughing, and sneezing extremly painful. Even moving from a sitting position to a standing position can become extremely painful. Other the counter (OTC) anti inflammatories are the treatment of choice (Motrin/Advil/Aleve). In a non asthmatic, cough suppressants can also be used. Asthmatics have to be very careful with cough suppression as their cough is important to prevent mucous plugs from forming. So, having said all that, I would say Tylenol and anti inflammatories, a rib belt for comfort and support (also OTC), and call your doctor to see if cough suppression is okay. Bottom line is your intercostal muscles won't heal until they get rested, and they won't rest until your cough goes away. I hope you feel better soon!
