Chest pains and difficulty breathing with mild coughing after running?
This has happened before... Today while running, very quickly, I got out of breath, had a very tight and painful feeling across my chest and lower ribcage. I also started hearing a slight wheezing sound when I breathed in (I was breathing really hard) and I also had a mild cough.

The last time I went to the doctors (nurse, really) she dismissed it when I told her I sometimes have chest pain and she said it might be anxiety. However, the chest pain is usually related to physical activity.

Could this be asthma? I'm an adult and have never been diagnosed.

Are you sure it's not cramps? It sort of sounds like you're just having frequent cramps while running. You might have asthma also....because of the cough/wheeze. I'm no expert, and I hate to disagree w/ a professional but I do not think it is anxiety. I hope I helped you.....

Check into exercise-induced asthma.

I think it may be related to the conditions you are running in...but I'm no expert. I have similar symptoms when I run in the cold, smog or even very damp air. Also when I don't run for a few days and then start up again. I've switched my cardio to walking and I use the treadmill indoors now in the winter.

Best of luck.

well...it sounds like asthma to me...but don't get too worried or hung up about it..
i'm not for certain but, maybe you are just running wrong or something...deffinatly somethings not right...try a new doctor.

I have been diagnosed w/ adult asthma, but it only comes on when i do any kindof cardio or work out. I have to take an inhaller before i work out so i dont lose my breath that easly. My bro has had asthma since he was born, so when i got older and told my doc. about this it was more looked into because of the family history, so with that said, i would go see a diffrent doc. its so not fun to be in shape but your still out of breath everytime you run. Hope this helped.

Asthma Signs & Symptoms

The following list includes some of the common ways in which asthma may show up in you or your child:

* Trouble breathing with respiratory infections

See Your Doctor If...

There are two types of asthma: the allergic type, and exercise-induced asthma. Exercise-induced asthma is triggered by breathing cold, dry air. It can be reduced by wearing a jogger's mask, to prehumidify the air that you breath. Also, taking an inhaler 30 minutes before exercise.

The next time you talk to your doctor (avoid that nurse) you want to emphasize the tightness in your chest and the wheezing. Don't say chest pain. Instead say chest tightness. That way, you can avoid the patronizing responses.
