Heartburn

Definition:

Heartburn is a painful burning sensation in the esophagus, just below or behind the breastbone. The pain often rises in your chest and may radiate to your neck or throat.

Alternative Names:
Pyrosis; Non-cardiac chest pain
Common Causes:

Almost everyone has occasional heartburn. If you have frequent, ongoing heartburn, you may have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Normally, when food or liquid enters your stomach, a band of muscle at the end of your esophagus (called the lower esophageal sphincter or LES) closes off the esophagus. If this muscle fails to close tightly enough, stomach contents can back up (reflux) into the esophagus. This partially digested material is usually acidic and can irritate the esophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms.

Heartburn is more likely to occur if you have a hiatal hernia, which is when the top part of the stomach protrudes upward into the chest cavity. This weakens the LES and makes it easier for acid to reflux from the stomach into the esophagus.

Heartburn can be brought on or worsened by pregnancy and by many different medications.

Such drugs include:

Calcium channel blockers for high blood pressure
Progestin for abnormal menstrual bleeding or birth control
Anticholinergics (e.g., for sea sickness)
Certain bronchodilators for asthma
Tricyclic antidepressants
Dopamine for Parkinson's disease
Sedatives for insomnia or anxiety
Beta blockers for high blood pressure or heart disease
If you suspect that one of your medications may be causing heartburn, talk to your doctor. NEVER change or stop medication you take regularly without talking to your doctor.

Acid reflux can be dangerous so see a doctor. In the meantime, try not eating huge amounts at one sitting and never wear anything tight around your waist.

Try Zantac dispersible, you only need one a day, then after a while it may go away, but I would suggest the doctors as it is normal to get it daily. Hope you feel better soon.

It may be more than just heartburn....go to your doctor...he may put you on a prescription medication for GERD.....have it checked out please......

You could have a reflux problem; a hiatus hernia or an ulcer. Docs needed i'm afraid!

Mrs.Doyle
Lay off the vinegar, drugs, weed, cigarettes, alcohol.....?
Are you a bit porky? If so, then lose some weight.
If in doubt - see GP.

Ok i had this problem and i had an endoscopy where they insert a camera into the stomach..I was found to have a thing called Helicobacter Pylori, which wad treated with high doses of anto biotics for a week...I also was diagnosed with a condition called Reflux Oesophagitus.
It is due to a build up of to much acid in the gut which rises up into the food pipe..Now i have courses of acid reducing tablets which help a lot..Its best to go to ure g.p and get this checked out properly but its my guess that u may have the Reflux condition..

Doctors. Get it sorted.

Sad Mom
The others are right it could be GERD or a hiatal hernia. Either way its too much acid coming back up into your esophagus. This can lead to even further complications such as Barrett's Esophagus if it is let go too long. This is when the stomach lining itself has literally grew up into the esophagus. Barretts can spread out like fingers and can turn to cancer. Its like the last stage of acid reflux. Click here read more about it.

You should get this checked out without delay, I had the same problem I was sent to the hospital and after having a camera put down it was found that I had a valve which was not working, so therefore, acid was coming through even as high as my throat, I am now on tablets for the rest of my life, and having had a lifetime of misery I do not get this awful burning sensation anymore.

andrew
I think you have acid reflux disease. A prescription like nexium would neutralize the HCL acid in your stomach; while giving your esophogus time to heal the tiny ulcers caused by your heartburn

dick19532003
you should go to your gp you may have something wrong .
could be hiatus hernia or ulcer or nothing to worry about but u need it checked out .
its too much acid in your stomach is the cause ,gets worse usually if u lay down ,try propping the top of the bed up on 2 bricks

could be a ulcer see Dr

blondie
Ask your GP to do the Helicobactor Pylori test, you prob are suffering from an ulcer, if this test is positive you can be given a course of antibiotics which will get rid of the ulcer completely
