Is giving blood bad for you?
Surely losing a pint of blood every now and again cant be good for you, must take a lot of effort to re-make it, even taking material from your muscles to make it? Though in prehistoric times Im sure with all the violence and hunting we lost a lot of blood and would have adapted accordingly so maybe where supposed to lose it?

they only take a small amount of the extra blood in your body
and your cells reproduce and make more blood over time
but you might feel disy after giving blood

I am ready
I don't think it is bad, I donate 3-4 times a year. The only time is bad and you donate the double red cells and have a blood test at the doctors 2 days later. He was confused why by blood cells we so low. I have hurt people that donate blood are healthier because the body is producing new blood.

It is just fine.

It definately doesn't do you any good but not much harm either. Think of the people who benefit from it, it could be you one day!

no. If your healthy.

Sarah C
I give blood, and usually have no problems at all, even though I'm only just above the acceptable wight to donate it. It doesn't hurt, and now I usually try to race myself to get it done as quickly as possible!

It is worth it, to know that I may have saved someones life. Especially as two people I'll never get to say thanks to saved my sister's life when she suffered a stillbirth. I am grateful to them every day, as I don't think I could have coped with losing a nephew and my sister.

No your body will produce more

A lot of athletes will take out a pint of blood and then a few weeks before they compete will put it back into their system. That way, their body has replenished the blood that was taken from them and now they have more :)

Guess Who
no! donating blood is a good thing... you could be saving a life somewhere out there... you just cant be donating blood every month... i donated blood last week as a matter of fact and they told me i cant donate again until january

nah .. its bad for u as long as its given carefully .

nah it isnt bad, just not too much at one time.

It is not bad for you. Your body reproduces blood in the bone marrow, not the heart. When it detects low blood amounts it reproduces blood in chemical and osmotic processes. Your blood contains red blood cells that wear out over time and have to be replaced, so your body in sense, is getting rid of blood. The average life cycle of blood is about 120 days.

Its good for someone else.

No, not if you're giving away a little at a time, like a pint or so.

It's not bad for you. Your body is capable of regenerating your blood volume. As long as your healthy, go for it. You're saving lives!

FYI: Blood cells are made in bone marrow, not muscles. Plasma is mostly water and is generated through absorbtion in your intestines from what you ingest

It does you the world of good, you feel like a hero (not a chance you get often in everyday life) and you replenish the fluids very quickly. Very few people get ill-effects. Have a look at www.blood.co.uk sometime

your body will make it up again quite quickly.
in the olden days a lot of ailments were treated by "bleeding" the patient. horses were cured of some ailments by "bleeding". it must do something right.
perhaps it lowers blood pressure for a while
even using leeches to help clotting is making a comeback.
whatever next?

it is good for you it makes your body make fresh blood

no, in fact it's sometimes good to "lose" blood because it causes your cells to create new, clean blood. After giving blood at first though, donors may feel dizzy or nauseated. After about a day or so, they feel fine because their bodies have recreated the lost blood.

I have heard it is not bad, it is good. You do remake new blood, and the new one is obviously better than the old one. Think logically.

I donate blood every 6 weeks just because I feel like it's helping someone in need. Your body will replace the blood volume (plasma) within 48 hours. It will take four to eight weeks for your body to completely replace the red blood cells you donated. The average adult has eight to 12 pints of blood. You will not notice any physical changes related to the pint you donated.

been giving blood for decades now. Never get a serious cold, fvery few incidents of flu or illness. No ill effects; may be the body works better when you have to replace lost blood and it gets to use systems not generally in use.

You don't have to 'remake' it. You are creating new red blood cells all the time (and the rest of your blood is just a means of transport for chemicals).

Disgusting fact: The reason your s*** is brown is because of all the dead red blood cells, which will have to be replaced with new ones.

You will get a little tired for a few days. That's it. And your blood might help save someones life.

No it is not bad for you, your body remakes it in about 24 hours, it is just important to drink lots of fluids and rest afterwards. Fresh blood being made never hurts you.

Neil S
It is not bad for you, if anything it is good for your body to regenerate new blood. It also allows your body to stay healthy in that creating new blood will help you if you ever need to regenerate blood.

Actually you regenerate the blood within a day and you can only donate once every 3-4 months, it's very safe.

If you are in good physical health, you shouldn't notice the difference. Obviously, it isn't good for you, but it sure is for people who require a transfusion..
The body actually has approximately 8 pints of blood, and it will take up to 90 days for complete recovery of cells, though plasma in couple of days. Thus, initially you now have 7/8 of your prevoius haemoglobin content (v/v) .(i.e not good if your anaemic).
If your healthy, make sure you take care of yourself afterwards(especially nutritionally).
That said, by giving blood you are doing a great service for humanity.

Blue-eyed Stranger
Actually, it is just the opposite.......'making' your body regenerate blood is a healthy activity for the body and everyone should be encouraged to do so. The volume is restored rather quickly while the red blood cells take a while to regenerate.
