Floating Stools? What does it mean?
I know its not the most catchy title for a question , but this is a question i always wanted an answer for.. My stools always float and I have been having digestion problems all the time. What does floating stools mean? Does it mean my bladder is not functioning well or fat absorption is bad?

no i think it's actually good. I heard it's a good sign, when they sink it's a bad sign. if they're too fatty you'll see it in the water surrounding as it will be slightly greasy.

Stop eating that styrofoam diet

You need to change your diet/eating regime!!!
Get more fibre in your body, that should soon sort you out!!

As far as I know, most veggies have floating stools - indicating high fibre diet. As long as they are 'normal' colour and consistency, there shouldn't be too much wrong. If you are worried, see your gp or practice nurse

You are suppose to be healthy if your stools float.
Something to do with you eating the right type of foods.

It actually means your digestion is good. Stools are supposed to float - if you produce a log that sinks to the bottom of the toilet that is a sign of lack of fibre.
On the other hand the colour is important - if the stools are pale/white then that is a sign of fat malabsorbtion.

I'm surprise you can name yourself "Foundlove" when you're admitting to problems like that! Thought of changing your name to "Floaters"

Floating stools are fatty, this is known as Steatorrhea. It could be as you suggest an absorption problem. You say 'always', do you mean since you were a child?

I don't think one can either tell if you actually have a medical condition or give a diagnosis just with what is in the question. If you are otherwise well, probably not. If you are concerned you would need investigation, so inevitably I would have to say see your GP.

It means that somebody has just split from his mrs and she threw all his stuff in the river---**** on him hahahahahah

Floating stools is seen is a variety of different situations. Most are diet-related or caused by episodes of diarrhea that accompany an acute gastrointestinal infection. A change in dietary habits can lead to an increase in the amount of gas produced by bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract.

Similarly, acute gastrointestinal infections can result in increased gas content in the intestines due to rapid movement of food through the GI tract. One misconception is that floating stools are caused by an increase in the fat content of the stool. In fact, it is increased gas levels in the stool that make it less dense and allow it to float.

Another cause of floating stools is malabsorption. More than two weeks of diarrhea with floating stools is often seen in people suffering from malabsorption, a dysfunction in the GI tract that affects the body's ability to digest and absorb fat and other types of foods.

Increased levels of nutrients in the stool (which have not been absorbed by the GI tract) are supplied to the normal bacteria that live in the gut, which in turn produce more gas. This results in more gas-rich stool that floats.

Common Causes Return to top

Dietary changes, diarrhea, and malabsorption can cause floating stools. Most causes are benign and will resolve when the infection ends or the bacteria in the GI tract adjust to the changes in your diet.

Patients with the following diseases may also have stool that floats:

Cystic fibrosis
Gluten-induced enteropathy (sprue or celiac disease)
Idiopathic steatorrhea (fatty stools with no known cause)
Disaccharides deficiency (insufficient amounts of the sugar-digesting enzymes Lactase, sucrase, or isomaltase)
Short bowel syndrome
Biliary atresia
Abetalipoproteinemia
