How long should you stay on the computer each day?

Dr. Rekhaa Kale
Till you are bored.

Charlie Farlie
Until you have to put matchsticks under your eye lids.

A Dane's Sweetheart
Probably only a couple hours. Unfortunately I work at 2 jobs where I use the computer at both, so I'm on a computer over 8 hours per day. Just remember to get up and stretch your legs and don't strain your eyes or back or neck.

A Government Directive indicates that it is unhealthy to stare at VDU's for long periods of time. In fact there is legislation instructing Companies the minimum time and how to ensure their work place stay healthy!

In our company, it is one hour, and then you must take a five minute break and move about. Other things to consider are the clarity of images; flicker and movement, brightness/contrast; height, swivel, tilt adjustment; glare and reflection free. Keyboard - readable glare-free characters; tilt-able with space to rest hands.

In fact Companies are duty bound by law to provide all employees with a sight test annually!

As little as is practical.

Oh I wish I would follow my own advice there.

It depends..sometimes i only want to stay ona few mins..but if there is a virus or spyware..it makes the computer so darn super slow!!!
So i have to sit and sit here...trying to finish my work etc...comptuers are so difficult sometimes!!!

You mean there is life beyond my computer?

more than 8 hours/day.

You should limit your computer usage. Unfortunately, in the world we live in where nearly EVERYONE uses a computer at either work or home, or both...that's almost impossible.

The key is to give your eyes a break every 30-45 minutes, if possible. If you have a job that requires a lot of data entry, you should try to take a break every 30-45 minutes and do something else - away from the computer for a few minutes and allow them to rest. Get up, walk around, get a drink, go to the bathroom - whatever...just get away from that monitor.

Staring at the computer causes SO much eyestrain. You tend to blink less and therefore your eyes tend to dry out. If you wear glasses, you should have an anti-reflective coating put on your lenses to reduce the amount of glare and reflection you get on the surface of your lenses, which results in even MORE eyestrain. The anti-reflective coating will get rid of that glare and reduce the amount of eyestrain. Ask your Optometrist for Zeiss or Crizal - 2 of the better coatings on the market. They can be a bit pricey, but worth EVERY PENNY to those of us who spend hours a day on the computer.
