Am I curvy? or just fat?
I am trying to lose some weight, but my motivation is not all that good. I joined the gym a couple of months ago, and have so far managed to lose 6.25 inches, although only a few lbs.

I am 5'3" and weigh 150 lbs. I am a size 12/14 in clothes and my measurements are 37-31-42. It's my hips that bother me the most - and you can see why.

I am unhappy within myself, hence the reason I joined the gym, but would just like to hear other perspectives on my figure. Don't be too cruel please, although honesty is appreciated.

I'm 22. All great answers so far (apart from the odd few).

I think as long as you don't have the female equivalent to a 'beer gut' you're fine. If you've got a protrusive tum you'll need to do a lot of sit ups.

You sound like you may be a tad overweight, but not obese. Kind of like my girlfriend :). Get out and get more exercise and eat sensibly and see what happens.

You are more than curvy, but no where near some people let themselves go. And you not being happy with how you look is the most important thing. BMI is a good place to start, but it does not take lean muscle mass into consideration. Lifting weights will build lean muscle mass which will burn more calories at rest, it will also help you do some "sculpting" in the areas that concern you the most. CONGRATULATIONS on your success at the gym so far. Use higher reps and go for the burn, this will help keep your muscles less bulky than a man's but VERY dense. It is great for bone density, too :)

Since it appears you want to be a little smaller in the hips, I would suggest a healthy diet and continue exercising. Pick small goals and see how you feel when you get there. Watching your inches is better than obsessing over pounds. When you get to each of your goals, go to the mall and try on some cute clothes in the appropriate size and see how you feel about how you look (Don't buy until you get to your happy point, though). If you aren't as pleased as you would like, then set another small goal and work towards it. The slower you go, the less likely you will deal with any significant skin sag and the easier it will be to keep any weight off in the long run (though you do not sound overweight enough to worry about sag part).

If you are a size 12 or 14 you are absolutely fine.

Especially as you go to the gym, as fitness is v important.

I wouldn't worry about it, when you get to Size 18/20 like me and you cant find clothes you like, worry then.

You are reasonably curvy, because if you look at your waist/hip ratio, it is just below 0.74.

If you continue to lose fat, you will find that your measurements will continue to reduce but the waist/hip ratio will be even lower. For example, if you lost 10lb and your hips became 40 inches and your waist became 29 inches, your waist hip/ratio would than be just above 0.72, making you even more curvacious!

I wouldn't say you're fat by any stretch of the imagination, you sound healthy and curvy.

Well done on the inch lose, I'm on a health kick at the moment and have lost 15lbs and 14 inches from all over my body.

Just think of it this way you've already lost 6.25 inches and it will keep going if you do.

Do you enjoy going to the gym? Or do you see it as a chore? If you're not enjoying it then maybe you should see if there's anything else you'd rather be doing, swimming, cycling, walking..... that sort of thing.

You should be happy how you look. No-one else's opinion should affect how you feel about yourself. Everyone is beautiful in their own way. You just have to accept yourself as being beautiful. Dont let people get you down. But if there is no way that you can be happy without loosing a bit more weight then i reckon that you should continue going to the gym. See how it goes? Take the gym to be a fun thing rather than somewhere you go just to loose weight. All i can say is.. love yourself from inside and there's nothing anyone says can affect you. I hope this helps x

great job losing the 6.25 in.......the inches r far more important than the lbs.....u didn't say how old u r.....it all depends....u should worry more about how u feel about ur self and ur eating and exercise habits....i am 45 yrs old....only 3/4 in taller than u but weigh much more, but wear the same size....i am very muscular under my fat......you should work on toning exercises....keep up what ur doing and u will notice a big difference in how you look and feel....stay away from the scale and use your tape measure to see ur results....eat healthy........once again GREAT JOB!

First of all, congratulations on your success in losing 6.25 inches. It's the inches that count, after all, not the weight.
And to answer your question regarding your figure, it all depends on how you feel about your body, not what we think. However, you have already stated that you are not happy with your hips. So keep working out until you get they look the way you want them to. You've already made big changes in your figure in just these last couple of months.

First off, most guys like curves! So don't be so hard on yourself. You have to consider that the harder you work out the more muscle you will build and that will cause the scales to seem askew. You've done the right thing by tracking the inches lost, because ultimately your muscle tone and how you look in your clothes, whatever the size, is what matters, right? Due to the density of muscle it weighs more than fat inch for inch. Be sure you eat low fat and high protein, you will see a difference with perseverance. Good Luck, keep your chin up!

Your hour glass figure is probably also down to genetics and body type. Even if you lose weight your shape will still be in the same ratio. Hour glass figures are considered attractive by most men because the wider hips tells us subconsciously that you will be better at childbirth, therefore offspring have a greater chance of survival. This is important for the survival of the species, so deep down men are drawn to gils with shaps like yours.

you have a bit of extra baggage just like me ...your curves sound great ...some time we are big boned even more so on our hips...so buy losing weight everywhere else will make our hips look bigger,,u sound very much in proportion and no way 2 fat ..and good for you for losing a few pounds

It is great that you lost 6.25 inches in 2 months, that is good progress in such a short time. Continue your exercise regimen and be active everyday. All of us come in different sizes, so don't beat yourself up about it. Eat right, drink lots of water and consume multi-vitamins. Enjoy your exercise and you will be able to lose the weight that you want. Reduce your stress and have a positive attitude that you are taking steps to have a healthy lifestyle.

Its hard to really tell w/out a pic.,but it sounda like your more curvy than fat.You probably have a lil more junk in the trunk than ya should but your already taking a great step(joining a gym)and u already lost over 6 inches -thats great!!!!!!!!
Im a trainer from curves so i know how difficult it can be at times.

Just keep up the great work,also try to ;limit carbs(eat lots of protein)

So you're a little curvy - big deal! I'm skinny and I don't care if women are curvy, as long as they have curves instead of rolls. Whatever your size, exercise is good for you. Overweight women who exercise are healthier than skinny women who don't exercise and that's a fact!

Good clothes can also make you feel better. The best place clothes should exaggerate for women is right below the bust, because that's the skinniest place on any woman. Horizontal stripes are big no-no, while suddle vertical stripes and dark solids can also make you look thinner. After you buy the good clothes, all you have to do is put them on without a thought; play your cards right and you'll feel more confident in yourself.

First and foremost, please do not be cruel to yourself! Instead love and appreciate yourself.

It is the person within that will ultimately make people and you happy. Just enjoy your life and make the most of it coz it is only given to us once.

And my dear being a 12/14 is not fat! Imagine those people larger than you.

If you really are bothered get someone your size and you go together to the gym and motivate each other.

at least you have lost...some women out there would kill to be 150lbs and be able to fit in to ur size...ask your self apart from the gym wat else would u like to do that involves movementand will motivate you such as squash badminton, swimming dancing!

keep going it does'nt melt away over night it takes time

im dieting atm, lost 9lbs with weight watchers in the past 10 weeks, been slipping loads this week tho, dont know where my motivation has gone!!

im hoping to get down to a size 10/12 but we will have to see!

You are not fat, just curvy. I am a size 12, with a bit of a tum, so I know how it can affect your own self esteem. But at the end of the day dont you just hate the size zero look?

hello hunny...ok to cut the chase i've been a size 18 and a size 0 and in between.I'm at my happiest now at a size 10.
All I want to say is plz don't do what i did and stop eating to become a size 0 and figure i was deeply miserable that size.

firstly you are about the same size as me

if you go to the gym you will loose inches put may put on weight as muscle weighs heavier than fat

so even though you are not loosing weight tou are toning up

you are curvy my friend

just loose a few pounds a week and exercise 3/4 times a week

otherwise if you loose too much too fast it wont saty off.

i am eating lots of fruit and salad, exercise at weekends

and am slowly loosing weight and inches, well cemter meters inmy case

dont give up

Your BMI isn't even that bad, you're not even considered obese, so take a deep breath and relax. Your BMI is 26.6, which is in the overweight zone, but just barely. Drop about 10 pounds, and you'll be considered normal weight. But don't stress over it, wouldn't you rather look healthy instead of skin and bones?
