Is deodorant unhealthy for your body?
i heard that it causes cancer. is this true? also, i heard that the way deodorant works is that it stops the body from sweating and keeps toxins in, therefore it is not healthy for your body. is this true? if not, how else does deodorant work? thanks

Florida Girl
Not unless your are allergic to one of the ingredients in it. If it were true that it causes cancer, it would no longer be for sale or like cigarettes, it would having a huge warning on each package. Don't believe everything your friends tell you.

That is not true because everyone should use deodorant!

the cancer rumor is just that a rumor and is not true, Deodorant doesn't stop you from sweating, that is anti-perspiant (I know I didnt spell that right LOL) but that is also not true. You sweat all over your body not just your arm pits so toxins can get out that way.

you have an immune system and digestive system that gets rid of toxins. the function of sweat is to regulate your body temperature and has nothing to do with "toxins", despite what many people (read: idiots) will likely try and tell you.

if you believe that sweating gets rid of "toxins", then you too, are gullible and an idiot that lacks basic knowledge of your own physiology. you should read a biology textbook. i've pointed you to a basic "sweat for idiots" below. read it, for pete's sake.

use deodorant or no boys will like you.

never believe anyone who references wikipedia.

Still can try.

EVERYTHING can cause cancer if used in excessive amounts. Using deodorant once or twice a day will do nothing.

When they experment on rats to see what will cause cancer, they completely surround the rats with the substance. It would be the equivalent of living in a house made of deodorant.

mike p
yep gives you armpit cancer

Yes, you are correct, but considering you have already used it, it doesn't matter now, as the chemicals never leave your body. Just as nail polish, color for your hair, etc.

Sweet Embrace
I use an all natural deodorant called liquid rock from the brand Kiss my face. It contains none of the antiperspirant ingredients you are speaking of. Antiperspirant is the thing which stops you from prespiring. The toxins in sweat need to evacuate the body, so they are not contaminating our system. So yes it can create a variety of health problems.
Deodorant itself is a masking agent to hide the scent.

Yes. It is applied right next to a certain gland (forgot the name) that causes cancer, and I think it also causes breast cancer, I'm not sure though. Don't rely on my information 100%, because only some people believe it. I've heard other people don't believe in it.

Mr. Vincent Van Jessup
understand, you don't dip your whole body in deodorant. You dab a few cc's under your arms. If it keeps you from sweating under your arms, it doesn't keep you from sweating elsewhere.

As far as toxcity, the stuff with aluminum may poison you at some level. The jury's still out.

Aluminum has been established as a neurotoxin.

Aluminum Chloride, an aluminum salt that is commonly used in antiperspirants, is also commonly used in studies on aluminum-induced neurotoxicity.

Aluminum itself adversely affects the blood-brain barrier, is capable of causing DNA damage, and has adverse epigenetic effects. Research has shown that the aluminum salts used in antiperspirants have detrimental effects to a number of species such as non-human primates, mice, dogs and others.

An increased amount of Aluminum is also present in the brains of many Alzheimer's patients, although it is not yet known if this link is causal.

An experiment with mice found that applying an aqueous solution of Aluminum Chloride to the skin resulted in "a significant increase in urine, serum, and whole brain aluminum."[27] Other experiments on pregnant mice showed transplacental passage of Aluminum Chloride.

yes it is , its made of alumunum, poisonous

No, a doctor told me that it is a common myth, and that deodorant is completely safe to use.

As far as we can tell, deodorant does not cause breast cancer. Anti-perspirant stops you from sweating, not deodorant. Many people use a combination stick. If you are overly concerned about aluminum, you can buy an all natural deodorant stick from WalMart of a Thai Stone from a health food store. (We recommend corn starch or baby powder to patients undergoing radiation b/c the radiation won't react with them like it will the aluminum.)

Better than the death risk you put on everyone around you when you go without deodorant. Pick your poison.

A recent study linked Alzhiemer's to aluminum accumulation in the body, somewhat. And aluminium is the main ingredient in the VAST MAJORITY of deoderants.

If you're concerned, I HEAVILY reccomend Thomas of Maine's! It's an all-natural brand: no aluminum, and it's NOT an anti-persperant. That means that although it masks the SMELL of B.O., it won't actually prevent you from sweating. I wear it and it works great!

*smiLe :)
everything causes cancer hun. the sun, pollution, too much Calcium, cell phones...y would deodorant be any exception? To stop using something because "it causes cancer" is like staying inside so you dont get hurt. Its inevitable.

According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the breast cancer-antiperspirant myth first appeared in the form of an e-mail in the 1990s, and continues to resurface and recirculate about every year or so. The false information suggests that antiperspirants contain harmful substances, which can be absorbed through the skin or can enter the body near the breasts through nicks in the skin caused by shaving. The e-mails also suggested that antiperspirants keep a person from "sweating out toxins," resulting in the spread of cancer-causing toxins via the lymph nodes.

But the NCI says that no existing scientific or medical evidence links the use of underarm antiperspirants or deodorants to the subsequent development of breast cancer. The FDA, the Mayo Clinic, the American Cancer Society (ACS), and the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association agree. Razor nicks may increase the risk of skin infection, but not cancer.

Deodorants work by killing the odor-causing bacteria in the underarm area. Anti-perspirants work by primarily blocking the sweat glands in the underarm area. However, this is not considered a health hazard because according to the ACS, sweat glands are not connected to the lymph nodes. Most cancer-causing substances are removed by the kidneys, are released through urine or by the liver, and are eliminated with feces. The ACS says that lymph nodes may help to clear some toxins from the body, but they do not release these toxins through sweating. Sweat is not a significant route for eliminating toxins from the body.

And a study of 813 women with breast cancer and 703 women with no history of breast cancer, published in the October 2002 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, found that antiperspirants do not cause breast cancer. Some speculate that the myth could have been started by women being told not to wear antiperspirants or deodorants before a mammogram. They were told this, not for safety reasons, but because residue from these products appearing in the X-ray is often mistaken for an abnormality in the breast.

Yes, they say it's bad for you because almost all store brand ones contain aluminum, which in lab rats has been known to cause cancer over time.

Deodorant itself doesn't stop you from sweating it just helps you stay smelling nice, covering it up. The antiperspirant is what helps cut down on the wetness part of sweating.

I found this list of common ingredients for deodorants:
aluminum chlorohydrate, parabens, propylene glycol, triclosan, TEA, DEA, FD&C colors, and quaternium 18.

All the above are listed in Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) as toxic, harmful or carcinogenics.

Everything we put on our skin eventually finds its way to our bloodstream, lymph system, organs and so forth.

There are some natural deodorants and/or powders (not baby powder...Talc is also a carcinogen) that are non toxic - plenty of websites out there :o)

What works best in my opinion is is drinking liquid chloraphyll, get the mint flavored!
Unfortunatly it turns your tounge green for a little while HA!
(oh yeah, use natural toothpaste...Fluoride is another toxin)

But luckily it comes in supplement form also, both are sold as an "internal deodorant". For me personally the liquid just does the job better.

Drinking Peppermint tea does wonders. Take clay baths - this releases toxins from your skin.

Hope this helps!

I've also heard that it causes breast cancer.
but you gotta use it so you don't stink!

The Questioner
I dunno, but iI bet it can be unhealthy to those around you if you dont use it.

:.Rocker At Heart.:
if it has aluminum in it and chemical yes it's bad get a 100% natural one

Yea it is unhealthy and long term use of aluiminums are linked to alzheimers aswell. With some detoxing and eating organic foods you can get rid of all body odor..

One of the more commonly asked questions about breast cancer is about deodorants and breast cancer. There has been quite a bit of controversy and commotion over whether antiperspirants and deodorants cause breast cancer.

There has been tons of warnings circulated through email and the internet that the use of deodorants and antiperspirants can cause breast cancer. The suggestion is that a chemical is absorbed through the skin through a shaving nick or cut, and causes breast cancer.

According to the National Cancer Institute, "researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) are not aware of any conclusive evidence linking the use of underarm antiperspirants or deodorants and the subsequent development of breast cancer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which regulates food, cosmetics, medicines, and medical devices, also does not have any evidence or research data that ingredients in underarm antiperspirants or deodorants cause cancer."-
