If your white blood cell count is up, does that mean you have cancer?
My mom has a wacky doctor kinda like the one on Picket Fences, and he said that her white blood cell count is very high. He said she probably has cancer, but i'm thinking there are other things that cause a high white cell count

A CBC test usually includes:

White blood cell (WBC, leukocyte) count. White blood cells protect the body against infection. If an infection develops, white blood cells attack and destroy the bacteria, virus, or other organism causing it. White blood cells are bigger than red blood cells and normally fewer in number. When a person has a bacterial infection, the number of white cells can increase dramatically. The number of white blood cells is sometimes used to identify an infection or monitor the body's response to cancer treatment.

White blood cell types (WBC differential). The major types of white blood cells are neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. Immature neutrophils, called band neutrophils, are also included and counted as part of this test. Each type of cell plays a different role in protecting the body. The numbers of each one of these types of white blood cells give important information about the immune system. An increase or decrease in the numbers of the different types of white blood cells can help identify infection, an allergic or toxic reaction to certain medications or chemicals, and many conditions, such as leukemia.

White blood cells (leukocytes) help fight infection in your body. A normal white blood cell count is between 4,500 and 10,000 cells per microliter. A high white blood cell count (leukocytosis) isn't a specific disease. But it may indicate an underlying problem that requires medical evaluation. Causes of a high white blood cell count include:

Infection
Use of certain medications, such as Corticosteroids, antibiotics or anti-seizure drugs
Severe physical or emotional stress
Chronic bone marrow diseases such as a myeloproliferative disorder
Acute or chronic leukemia
Tissue damage, such as from burns

it depends on how high - infections can cause the count to be high - but REALLY high counts can indicate leukemia (a kind of cancer)

further tests would be needed...

good luck...

I was admitted to hospital because I had a rash, when they checked my white blood cells mine were very high. I had all sorts of tests and nothing showed up, they put it down to an infection. I'm fine now but high white just means theres an infection in your body that needs fighting. I would consider changing doctor though.

most infections and parasitic sicknes causes high white blood cells count. the symptom is called "eosinofilia" (is in spanish dont know how to say it in english sorry). still get cheked for cancer

It can also be a sign that the body is fighting infection. It really depends on the type of white blood cell. Not all of them mean cancer.

What a quack..........!!!

If your white blood cell count is up this means you are fighting off an infection......

To say that it is probably cancer is a disgrace...
Im sure it is prob a symptom of cancer all the same, just as it is a symptom of a million and 1 other things...

Tell her to see another doc

Yes, it could be an infection.

A white blood cell count alone doesn't indicate that you have cancer. It means your body is fighting an infection/ illness. He would have to do specific tests to determine that cancer is the culprit.

A high white blood count could be for numerous infections, but to be on the safe side try another docotor and ask their opinion.
