I Need The Points
Does smoking Marijuana make your Brain re-grow brain cells?
I heard my Uncle talking about it to my Dad.

I can say emphatically that drugs of any kind do nothing healthy for you period!

no but alcohol does

no way dude, you back up that neroBS thing with proof, I know for me, my brain repaired itself after I gave up the weed

that's wrong he just want him stop smoking

Marijuana does not kill brain cells. Other than altering your perceptions, it doesn't seem to have any harmful actions. Recent research has shown that marijuana-like substances might cause growth of new brain cells.

Exception: smoking anything and breathing it into your lungs is harmful. But marijuana doesn't need to be smoked to be taken into your body. Mmm brownines!

defintly not, it kills the brain cells!

Ima christan/catholic mix weird!
that is a stupid question cause every1 should know that marijuana makes u stupid and stupider

Yes, its called neurogenesis and marijuana has just recently been discovered to cause it.
They used to think you couldnt regrow brain cells but, they used to think alot of things.

Looks like theres a-lot of misperception out there...

Your brain never really re-grows cells, and anyway it wouldn't matter much. It's not how many cells you have, it's how you use what you've got.

If anything marijuana leads to the death of brain cells, but then so do a lot of other things, including getting old.

According to my psychology book, smoking marijuana can make your IQ go down by a point or a few. Most people believe that it makes you lazy, but I believe it can do the opposite for some people. Also according to my psychology book your IQ will be recovered in approximately 1 month. All the other stuff is really just moral and political hype.

I don't know, but wouldn't that be nice???

I vote for anyone that backed up their argument with research. If pot makes you dumb, then why did potheads give better answers? Let's face it, saying that pot kills brain cells could be true, but you have to be able to prove it. After all the research that has been done, that's going to be almost impossible. Also, weed has proved (I wanted to say proven, but the speel check corrected me)medical benefits. According to just one study (so cross-checking wouldn't be bad) marijuana has no addictive properties. You can get into the habit, but not be physically dependent. Here's the link to the study: http://www.umsl.edu/~rkeel/180/brain1.html
The day facts become more important than propoganda, weed will be legalized.

Def. not.

Pot doesn't affect your.....ummmm, errrrr what were we talking about?

ummm...no. Science has proved that it does just the opposit and so have my hippie friends who have smoked since the 60's. Moderation is the key to everything and THC does have it's medical uses.

*Padding in all ready to say "No it does not", but as I ALWAYS research my answers and not just give bogus opinions I must instead say...* Actually, yes it could possibly at that.

Cannabinoids promote embryonic and adult hippocampus neurogenesis and produce anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like effects.

Previous research had suggested that neurogenesis happens only in select locations in the brain, such as the hippocampus, a region involved in learning and memory. Some studies have shown that this process is inhibited by most illicit drugs, such as Cocaine, heroin, and Methamphetamine. However, says Xia Zhang of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, marijuana's effect on neurogenesis has not been clear.

He and his colleagues started investigating this mystery by searching cell surfaces in live, cultured slices of rat hippocampus for receptors that respond to marijuana and a few other similar drugs, called cannabinoids. They reasoned that if marijuana affected neurogenesis in the hippocampus, then cells in that area must have a way to recognize the drug. Sure enough, 95 percent of hippocampus cells responsible for neurogenesis showed evidence of cannabinoid 1 ( CB1 ) receptors, one of two receptors that respond to cannabinoid drugs. http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v05/n1624/a06.html

The current study focused on a particular formulation of synthetic cannabinoid known as HU210 -- a compound which Zhang described as the most powerful cannabinoid in the world.

The authors explored both the short-term and long-term effects of exposure to HU210 in rats.

To measure the drug's short-term response, they gave adult rats a single injection of HU210. To study the same drug's effect over the longer term, the researchers gave a separate group of adult rats twice-daily injections of the cannabinoid over a two-week period.

Autopsies revealed that by the end of the 10-day HU210 treatment regimen, new neurons had been generated and integrated into the circuitry of the hippocampus region of the rat's brains. This process, known as neurogenesis, was still in evidence a full month after treatment had been initiated.

Neurogenesis was not triggered in response to brain cells being killed through cannabinoid exposure, the researchers add. In fact, HU210 injections did not appear to prompt any loss of neurons in the hippocampus. http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=54893

Mind you, the study is using a super-concentrated drug form and the verdict is still out on smoking it, but they do suggest THC is the only known drug that actually can reverse the loss of brain cells...

)o( Pagan Leather Goddess )o(
Your uncle sounds like he lost ALL of his brain cells a loooooooong time ago.

I am sure your dad is smart enough to check things out himself and has probably already tod your uncle he's a dufus.

no studies have proven that marijuana kills brain cells and the do not regenerate

Uh, duh! NO! In fact it does quite the opposite.

Alright, pretty much everyone above me is are idiots and dont know what theyre talking about. Let me clear this up for you.

It has not been actually proven that marijuana makes you brain regrow cells. Studies done on the subject have POINTED TO THAT POSSIBILITY. But nothing is conclusive as of right now.

On the other hand, it wont kill brain cells either. The THC chemical in marijuana travels to your brain when you eat or smoke the plant, and there it connects with special brain cells called Cannabinoid receptors. The THC then lightly coats these cells and in effect sort of tickles them, thereby getting you high. There is no damage caused to the brain at all and its possible that it might help re-grow brain cells, but as I said, nothings been proven yet.

Hope that helps.
