Is it possible to be allergic to chlorine in swimming pools?

susie
yes if you are allergic to chlorine, but cholrine is a good thing if you are not allergic to it because in swimmming pools are really drit because people can pee in it or their dirt is in the water so the chlorine does not clean it up but pervent you being sick and all!!!

If you get sore eyes after swimming try washing your eyes out with milk.

Secretgenius
Yes, I get a red itchy rash all over my body when i go in a chlorine pool

Jodie ♥♥
Yes, my friend can not do swimming any more as she gets red spots ! Ooooooo

guylover9898
maybe if its a public pool because the little kids can pee and it could mess up the chemicles

Ylang-Ylang
Yes, they use different chemicals and not just chlorine to disenfect and clean a pool. You could be allergic to one of these.

Immediate signs and symptoms of chlorine exposure
During or immediately after exposure to dangerous concentrations of chlorine, the following signs and symptoms may develop:
Coughing
Chest tightness
Burning sensation in the nose, throat, and eyes
Watery eyes
Blurred vision
Nausea and vomiting
Burning pain, redness, and blisters on the skin if exposed to gas, skin injury similar to frostbite if exposed to liquid chlorine
Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath (may appear immediately if high concentrations of chlorine gas are inhaled, or may be delayed if low concentrations of chlorine gas are inhaled)
Fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema) within 2 to 4 hours
Showing these signs or symptoms does not necessarily mean that a person has been exposed to chlorine.
What the long-term health effects are
Long-term complications from chlorine exposure are not found in people who survive a sudden exposure unless they suffer complications such as pneumonia during therapy. Chronic bronchitis may develop in people who develop pneumonia during therapy.

dunno but one time i went into a pool that probly had too much in it and it stung my eyes for the rest of the day and it really hurt to open, them but hasnt happend since

I don't know if you can be allergic but you should always shower it off afterwards because it can be quite drying for the skin. I always use a moisurising shower gel and that stops that itchy feeling that can occur afterwards.

Absolutely! This is a question I can answer. I've gotten a rash in places like my under pits and behind my knees. I also gotten red eyes, because I've opened my eyes underwater.

YES. I sneeze for 12 hours afterwards.

tercir2006
Chlorine, if I'm correct, is poisonous. I don't think it could be called an allergic reaction because just about anyone who is exposed to it reacts. The higher the exposure, the greater the reaction - all the way up to death.

I wouldn't guess it's an allergic reaction because there are things people are allergic to and I'm not. To me an allergic response is something that some people react to because their physical system is sensitive to that which causes the reaction.

joanna d 009
Yeah that totally possible

Yes it is, some people have a reaction to the chemicals in chlorine, one way to combat this if you like swimming is to cover yourself in E45 cream before you get in the pool, this acts as a barrier and therefore stops most of the chlorine touching your body, however if your reaction is very strong to chlorine then you may wish to swim in natural water pools rather than chlorine pools

Use of chlorine is highly unethical. Some people suffer skin rashes, sore eyes etc, others do not show any toxic symptoms yet chlorine causes/contributes to chronic liver damage. Salt water is best as another contributor pointed out, and it's eco friendly!

Chlorine is a poison after all

Absolutely. I love swimming, and can use a pool occasionally, but last year I did so every other day for 2 weeks and had such a bad attack of eczema I ended up on antibiotics.
If you do use the swimming pool and think you are allergic, make sure you don't do it too regularly, shower a lot afterwards (there are some special shampoos too which are designed to get chlorine out of hair, as it clings) and then make sure you use a good, hypoallergenic moisturiser.
Also moisturise your face before going in the water.

Hope that's useful.
I really wish they'd find an alternative to chlorine!

yes..from rashes to breathing problems. there are pools that are sea water or ozone cleansed which avoid chlorine

Pure chlorine by itself is so acidic it can melt glass. In a swiming pool, their should be less than 1% chlorine. If its more, then it can be harmful, if not lethal. You can't be 'alergic' to chlorine. If your having a reaction to it, then you've probably been over exposed to the stuff!

Emmy

It's not technically an allergy, since allergies are only to organic compounds, and chlorine isn't one. But, yes, you can have a sensitivity to chlorine, which has basically the same effect. If it's your own pool, you might try bromine instead, which should be available where you buy your pool chemicals. If it's a public pool, it's probably overchlorinated. They do that a lot.

capa-de-monty
its bleach with another name

Yes, gives me a red rash and itchy eyes. Shame love swimming- but ok in freshwater pool or sea.
