I want to get a dog, but am allergice to pet dander. Is there a way of developing a tolerance?

Marsha
remember to dust at least once a week

vacuum daily if needed

get short haired dog to prevent excess dander contact

have dog groomed regularly(if needed)

have shampoos for dogs to help prevent excess shedding

enjoy your extra friend!

You can get tests done and start a shot treatment, butI would find another pet. It's much cheaper.
It's possible you are alergic to only one kind of dog or ones out in the yard with dust on them.

You can develop a tolerance if you get allergy desensitation shots. However they may take two years to start working and they are expensive.

Yes there is away you can ask your doctor to prescribe "Claritin" and it will work out for yourself and the dog you want to get.

A doctor should be able to give you treatments to lessen the severity of the allergy.

Also, try to find a dog that doesn't make much dander.

Good luck!

Are you actually allergic to dogs? I'm allergic to cats, but most dogs are OK.

Also, check short haired breeds. The greyhound is particularly suitable for people with allergies. Try and spend some time with one and take some good deep breaths and see if it's OK.

There are a few answers for this one - firstly get a dog that doesnt lose its fur such as a poodle or there are even breed of dogs that has no fur at all its just got bald skin Dogs

American Hairless Terrier

Chinese Crested (hairless)

Get allergy tested and then get on shots. The work for my kids. There are also dogs out there that do not shed.

The best way to control the animal dander is to bathe your pet everyday if possible. Also, vacuum your home daily.

There is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog but there are a couple of breeds that many allergy sufferers can tolerate. These are the Havanese and the Bichon Frise. The Bichon is a small dog that generally weighs between 10-20 lbs and they have been bred to be lap dogs. The Bichon does not shed very much and instead has hair that grows and requires regular cutting. I was the proud owner of a Bichon that was rescued from a puppy mill. She had spent 6 years of her life in a little metal cage producing puppies and had never had a collar on or walked on a leash. She got along great with other dogs and with me, but was fearful of Everone else. She died last spring from cancer. If you would like to learn more about Bichons and how you can become the owner of a rescued dog please visit the following site: http://www.smallpawsrescue.org/
