Finding out what is causing this condition, may be the critical factor in determining why there is excessive congestion. Need to consider early sign of COPD.

Cough syrup (decongestant/expectorant) and an antihistamine. The cough syrup with the decongestant and expectorant will help you drain/cough out the mucus while the antihistamine prevents new mucus from forming. You can get cough syrup with an antihistamine but I prefer keeping the two medicines separate because one will wear off before the other.

Vicks makes a vaporizer pill that you put in a cup (included with the product) and fill with hot water. The lid that fits over the cup is shaped to cover your mouth so you can breathe in the steam. I think if anything, it makes you feel better.

Drink lots of water.

Organic apple cider vinegar. Two tablespoons mixed with a bit of water. Its harsh but it works for me. Check out this site...http://www.bragg.com/

you want mucinex, or whatever has guaifenesin in it. however, there is a new study out now saying that the original thought of robitussin or mucinex with the guaifenesin is not as good as just taking a first generation antihistamine such as benadryl along with a decongestant such as pseudoephedrine. hope this helps. pharmacy stud.

Drink a lot of water. Don't drink dairy products until the phlegm goes away. Robitussin is good too. I think it is CF.

First of all, may I let you know that excessive mucous associated with chest congestion, is no matter to be taken lightly. You may be experiencing acut bronchitis, which could lead to pneumonia of left untreated. There are mucolytic medicines that you can take which will basically soften the mucous in your lungs so that it will become easier to excreet/get it out from your body. For example, when you are taking a mucolytic drug, when you cough, the cough won't be so hard, and the mucous will readily come out. When all the mucous is gone, your lungs will be clear and your cough will stop. You should go to a doctor to perscribe the medicine for you. you can do some online searching for mucolytic medicine. You know, at this point, you might need antibiotics, if bacteria is already living in the mucous in your lungs. Me and my family take Cefalexin 500 mg. 3 times a day or every six hours, for seven days. You can try Cefalin or Cefaclor. Of course, it would be better to go to a doctor to make sure you aren't allergic to any antibiotics.

There are handy personalized pulmonizers. they basically generate a cool steam that will immediately soften the mucous in your lungs. You can put plain water in the pulmonizer/nebulizer or you can put Salbutamol Ventolin Nebules. Steam up one nebule for inhalation two times a day (morning and night) for three days. You could also do it every four hours if the phlegm is severe.

Make sure you increase your intake of fresh juices and more importantly, water.

If you decide to take antibiotics, it is very important that you finish the time (seven days) and take each capsule on time, each day. Even if you feel better already. If not, you may become immune to the benefits of the medicine.

Take Care!

Go to a doctor. If it's been going on for more than a week he/she might prescribe you an antibiotic. Especially in the case of chest congestion (if it is greenish or yellowish), it might develop into pneumonia.

robitussen DM (not sure if i spelled that right) but make sure it's DM. that helps break up the mucus. also drink lots of water. orange juice, drink some orange juice too, only because it will help boost your immune system. (also it may take at least 24 hours for the DM to really kick in and then you'll be coughing up flem) GOOD LUCK HUN!!!

Hi, I'm an R.N. and have worked in the respiratory field for 8 years.

The first thing to do is really push the fluids. Drink, drink, drink. If you are the least bit dehydrated, your mucus will thicken up like glue.

An over-the-counter mucolytic (means something that breaks up the mucus) might help too. The most common one is called guaifenesin. It's the active ingredient in many cough syrups. You want to get PLAIN robitussin (or the store brand equivalent). The DM, PE and other versions contail additional medications that you may not need.

Next, get in the shower and breathe in the moist, steamy air for 20 minutes a couple of times a day. This will help loosen up the junk in there.

If you start running a high fever (>101) or are ill longer than 2 weeks...go see your doctor!

I have done very well with Robitussin Chest that my cardiologist's nurse told me to try. For me it is MUCH better than Mucinex. I take the Robitussin 2-3 times a day, it even helps clear the back of the throat. The 8 oz bottle is about $8 in the drugstore, maybe can be gotten for less in a warehouse club such as Costco or BJ's. If you have a nebulizer, there is a medicine called Mucomyst, usually prescribed for use with liquid Albuterol.
