I asked if you can take methadone and Oxycontin at the same time?
The thing is my Dr. has me on both for pain he has me on 120mg of methadone and 80mg of oxycodone a day and it make no sence to me but when I ask him anything he just says it's o.k! But I'm starting not to trust him!

That is way to much!!!!

Hi, your prescriptions have been bothering me all morning, I just can't seem to figure why the physician would prescribed two Rx's like that, and that high of a dose. I did some research on-line, here are a few quotes from other patients:
"I have taken almost everything, including amphetamines for the pain, but this was easy to come off, compared to the narcotics. I have detoxed on three things in my short life: amphetamines (legal), Methadone (legal), and Oxycodone (legal). The most difficult was Methadone and it was done with the support of my pain management doctor(s), despite the fact that they didn’t want me to get off of the narcotics, because they knew I would be back on the narcotics. Well, they were correct, but it was worth it! I was off of them for about eight months, which was just awesome. Now, in the mean time, I would take low-dose Oxycodone for breakthrough pain, but I did not experience withdrawal (at all), because it was occasional dosing. " (1)

"On June 24th 2006 I lost my fiancé to methadone prescribed by a physician with a combination of other medications that acted as additives to the Methadone. He was a professional in Jasper, FL and had knee surgery after an injury. He became addicted to the percocet he was prescribed. He checked himself into a facility for , GA (part of South Georgia Medical Center ) for detoxification. Upon entering the facility he was drug tested and did not come up + for opiates or any other drugs (he had stopped taking the percocet 4 days before entering the facility). He was prescribed by a Dr. excessive amounts of methadone (for a person without a known tolerance) along with Valium and Klonopin. --Her fiance` died there in only a few days--- (2)

But, I am sure you know not to stop cold turkey on scheduled medications; I am guessing you were on something before?
**Do not stop taking acetaminophen and oxycodone suddenly if you have been taking it continuously for more than 5 to 7 days. Stopping suddenly could cause withdrawal symptoms and make you feel uncomfortable. Your doctor may want to gradually reduce your dose.
**Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur: dark urine (for propoxyphene only(this is davocet)); fast, slow, or pounding heartbeat; feelings of unreality; hallucinations (seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there); hives, itching, or skin rash; increased sweating (more common with hydrocodone, meperidine, and methadone); irregular breathing; mental depression or other mood or mental changes; pale stools (for propoxyphene only); redness or flushing of face (more common with hydrocodone, meperidine, and methadone); ringing or buzzing in the ears; shortness of breath, wheezing, or troubled breathing; swelling of face; trembling or uncontrolled muscle movements; unusual excitement or restlessness (especially in children); yellow eyes or skin (for propoxyphene only)..again, this is a quote from a Rx site on the Internet, but true.

I myself take take oxycodone as a breakthrough, but not much, at most 2 tabs a day.

<>>><<>>I may be off track, but wasn;t your first question about oxycodone (PERCOCET) or was is Oxycontin?
THERE is no way a competent doctor would ever prescribe methadone and oxycontin together?? No No! I know that for a fact, is there a mis-spelling in one of the questions, now I'm confused? Both of those are long-acting (extended).
In your comment you say oxycodone and in the title it is Oxycontin? I am sorry, which is it??
There is a big difference in the release of the two??
I don't know if I helped or not, but call the pharmacist or doctor and just make sure there was no mistake made in writing the script out?
>>>Good luck, but please remember whichever it is, it has to be a taper down to come off of them (stop) or change, and report any symptom's that may concern you, both causes respiratory distress so keep an eye on your breathing and your HR too. You can write me if you ever want to as well. Please take care, and don't mind any negative comments, unless their in the medical community their ignorance can overcome their judgement, chronic pain patients need medications! I can't say it enough, sorry, just see so many people get put down that ask a important question. But you do need to ask a physician or pharmacist, they know best, especially your medical history-everyone is different and tolerances are different!

Unless you are in advanced stages of cancer or have something seriously wrong this is some pretty potent medication.

You didn't really say what your pain is caused from. If you don't need all this medication don't take it. This why some people end up addicted or others can't get any pain medications because a few doctors over prescribe medicines and then the meds get a bad rap not the Doctor.

I would see another doctor, but you might be "Damned if you Do or Damned if you Don't" because another Doctor may pull the pain meds and you might be in some serious pain (and then unable to get anymore) and the first doctor won't take you back (because you dumped him). It's a real dilemma I am sure.

I hope you can resolve this and you feel better.

Call a 24hr pharmacy & talk to a pharmacist

Not a dr or pharmacist but am a chronic pain patient
Oxycontin is oxycodone with a time release matrix.
Is your rx for Oyxcontin? Or oxycodone w/tylenol, aspirin, etc.
My doctor does not prescribe 2 different long acting opioids. He would either increase the Methadone dose or the Oxycontin... but not use both.

The drugs and doses depend on the person. Also, there is NO MAX dose for pure opioids (morphine, methadone, fentenyl). The ceiling comes in with the tylenol, aspirin, ibuprofen added to the oxycodone/hydrocodone/etc- Percodan/Vicodin/etc

With pure opioids, there's no max dose. The maximum dose varies with each person and his tolerance. His max dose is the dose that is effective and does not cause side effects like respiratory distress.
So for you, 120mg may not be a dangerous amount.
HOWEVER, if OXYCONTIN 80mg is the other prescription, I would question that if you've never taken this amount of pain meds before.
What is your history with the meds?

If you're an opioid virgin, I doubt you'd have success with these 2 drugs (it would be too much)... but if you're a chronic pain patient, your body may tolerate it. I can tolerate *alot*. If my husband who weighs significantly more than me took half of what I do, he'd probably OD.

Methadone is long acting. It keeps a steady amount in your blood stream so you don't have those highs and lows like with Vicodin/Percodan. With Vicodin, it takes 30 minutes to start working and you can feel it wearing off 2-3 hrs later... but the next dose is still a couple hours a way- highs and lows.

For me, I take a 24 hr release medication. I also have Norco (hydrocodone/apap) to use for breakthru pain. I don't take the Norco unless my pain "breaks thru" and isn't being taken care of by the 24 hr release.

Do the instructions on the oxycodone say something like "take as needed".
When I started my long acting pain med, I started slowly and worked up to the dose I take now. During the titration, I used a lot more Norco because I was having a lot of pain still... but as my dose was titrated, I was able to slow down/quit the Norco. Now, I use the Norco maybe a few times a month.

It sounds like your doctor is treating your pain. Are you starting not to trust him because he didn't adequately explain your medication to you? Or do you think he hands out pain meds to easily? Or are you nervous of taking the meds together so in turn, you doubt the doc?
Did you have both rx's filled at the same pharmacy? This is vitally important so all drugs can be overlooked.

One thing I've done when I'm nervous about starting a new drug is that I make sure someone is home with me, knows that I'm taking a new drug, and all the drugs/doctors info... then I'll take 1 and wait to see how I'll react.
If you have more questions, feel free to email me.

Watch out with the methadone. You are taking the highest legal amount and it will take you 6 months to a year to dose down to a safe level to quit.

I have a cervical spine injury and you are taking twice the amount of pain as I do.

I tried the methadone pain management program and I regretted it for a long time.

Are you having problems sleeping and with waking up with hot flashes? That is from the methadone and even after you are off it it will take you a long time to get to where you can sleep somewhat normal.

I'm currently in a pain management program with hydrocodone, oxycodone, Soma, Neurontin, and a couple other nerve pain meds. Out of all the things I have tried over the last 10 years since I was injured the methadone was the worse thing I ever did.

Here are a few links I think will help you

this one is the FDA warning on methadone
