Can mould and fungus in your House affect your health?
I live in an old apartment. It is a renovated stables. It is full of character and pretty but gets very damp and wet. I try and air the house out regularly and I have a dehumidifier. When we moved in, there pink mould growing in the corner of the living-room carpet. I asked the landlord to treat it but he did nothing. Now there is a strange fungus growing on the wooden barrier that separates the living-room from the kitchen. Both myself and my boyfriend have suffered from respiratory problems since the move. Could the mould be the cause? If so how should we treat it.

Mold causes a lot of health problems. Definitely keep your eyes open for black mold as well--that's highly dangerous. If your landlord isn't doing anything--he's in violation of rules, etc. Call the housing board or the apartment owners to see what can be done. Good luck.

Stuck in the middle of nowhere
The mold is absolutely the cause. You need to get this fixed asap.

hello kitty
absolutely,,, mold and fungal spores are air born,,and you breathe it in every day...the carpets need to be pulled up and replaces after the floor boards have been washed down with bleach,, and the wall bords need to be replaces aswell....in Canada you can have a health assessment done on your apartment,, call the city

Mold can do a person a lot of harm. I would contact the landlord with a certified letter and if nothing is done go to the city/county. By being a tenant you have certain rights.

Alex
Mold can definatley be a health problem.

Different states have different procedures. What state are you in?

Here is the Dept of public safety information page on health dangers and what to do with mold: http://dhfs.wisconsin.gov/eh/HlthHaz/fs/moldinfo.htm

It sounds as if you might have toxic mold which does cause respiratory problems, fatigue, rashes, sinus problems, etc. There are molds that cause no problems, but what you are describing sounds like toxic mold. You should have an environmentalist come in & test the mold spores in your apartment. If you move be aware that your stuff (mattresses, furniture and clothing) might need to be thrown away so that you don't bring those mold spores with you and contaminate another dwelling. Definately go to the doctor's and have them record your problem and then tell your landlord that if he doesn't have the apartment fixed you will hire a lawyer to sue him for your medical costs and the property damage to your stuff. Definately try to contact a lawyer who handles mold cases. Your landlord is obligated to fix those types of problems, he needs to have the drywall & carpeting taken out or else the problem will continue. Maybe even try to contact the local news if your landlord continues to ignore you on the issue.
