Is he on dialysis? Dialysis could prolong his life for a number of years unless he also has other problems.

Suggest you talk with his Physician as he would know what all was involved with the kidney failure.

I worked in dialysis the past 2 years. Was his kidney failure due to high blood pressure? if that is the case, and there aren't any other complications, he has a very good chance of living for many years on dialysis, if he keeps a good attitude and does what the dietician and physician prescribe for him to do. There are many people who are on dialysis for 20 years or more! Stage 5 means that he has little to know urine output, so that means he needs to drink only the amount of fluids the dietician says for him to drink, so that the dialysis will be able to remove it all. Encourage your grandpa though, talk to him, I know people on dialysis get lonely, there are psychological implications. If he keeps his blood pressure under control, (taking his medication, --and I also hear that petting a cat or dog for 10-20 minutes a day can lower your blood pressure significantly) and if he has a good attitude about following the proper diet, (it is very important that he do this, and take phosphorus binders everytime he eats) it will prevent fluid overload, and serious cardiac complications that can result from kidney failure. Talk to him, though, see what his attitude about the diet and medication regimen is. That is your best indicator of his life expectancy. And, even if his attitude is poor, like I said, you can encourage him, and look into community resources or maybe even group therapy for people on dialysis. I have seen a man who was 84 years old get a kidney transplant, so now he doesn't even have to go to dialysis anymore! He actually just got back from a missions trip to brazil I think. A kidney transplant is also an option for your grandpa. Educate yourself, there's a great uncensored website for dialysis patients by dialysis patients called www.ihatedialysis.com and it has all kinds of information and forums of patients being supportive of each other and going through it together. You might even want to go to dialysis with your grandpa sometimes and just talk. From the point of view of a dialysis technician (those people who put the patient's needles in or hook their catheter up) I did not mind when family members would come in and sit there. And I also NEVER thought poorly of family members for not staying. I can understand. It is bittersweet---while you know it's keeping your grandpa alive it's still sad that he has to be on it. Anyway, whatever you do, keep praying, and I will say a prayer for your grandpa too :) keep faith
