Is ice cream gluten free?

Generally, the stuff at the supermarkets aren't. Premium ice cream might be...

You need to find an ice cream that is made from fresh ingredients. Many companies buy a powdered milk/sugar mix that just requires adding milk/water.... and this has a lot of additives

Also avoid any ice creams that have add-ins like cookie dough that'll have gluten..

tiggsy
Mostly not, but there are several specialist suppliers of gluten free ice cream.

Most supermarket ice cream contains mono and diglycerides and is not guaranteed to be gluten-free.

One of my favorites that is gluten-free is Breyers (not all flavors). There are some other premium brands that are gluten-free, you just have to read the labels as carefully as possible.

A lot of Ben & Jerry's flavors are gluten-free as well.

SOME ice cream brands are gf, many (ok, well most) are not. Go here, scroll down to snacks and desserts, but as always, READ THE LABEL!!!:
http://www.venturaceliac.org/glutenfree-basics.htm

Breyers All Natural Ice Creams: Vanilla, Chocolate, Chocolate Chip, Coffee, French Vanilla, Mint Chocolate Chip, Peach, Rocky Road, Strawberry, Vanilla Fudge Twirl, Vanilla/Chocolate/Strawberry, Take Two Vanilla/Chocolate, Frozen Yogurt Vanilla/Chocolate/Strawberry, Frozen Yogurt Chocolate, Light Vanilla, Light Mint Chocolate Chip

Dairy Queen Vanilla and Chocolate Soft Serve; Misty Slush. Their suppliers confirms the following are GF:
Lemon Freez'r; Cherry Lime Freez'r; DQ Fudge Bar; DQ Vanilla Orange Bar; DQ Vanilla Fudge Bar; DQ
Raspberry Vanilla Bar; StarKiss Bars

McDonalds: All ice cream sundaes are GF

Ben & Jerry's: except for ice creams with obvious gluten (cookies, etc.)

Dreyers: most flavors except those with obvious gluten

p.s. In the US mono and diglycerides are derived from a vegetable oil (but can be animal), if it uses a wheat based carrier, then by law it MUST be sourced and wheat MUST be declared on the label (d/t allergy labeling laws). (but as a note, some manufact. do have undeclared wheat by "accident" due to unannounced ingredient changes from suppliers. I always check the wheat allergy site for products with undeclared wheat! The allergics are really on top of things b/c of the "instant" reaction they get! )
