20/40 Vision.. do I need glasses?
As the title says, I have 20/40 vision. The schools nurse has always recommended that I get a pair of glasses, but I've held off on getting them. For all my life, I've believed that my natural eye sight would get worse if I became accustomed to glasses. Though, recently, I've heard that not wearing glasses/contacts when you don't have 20/20 will accelerate the rate at which your eye sight degrades over time.

So.. which is true?

1) Wearing glasses will give you 20/20 when they're on, but your natural, unaided sight will be diminished. You can choose to keep your natural eye sight over having a further disabling-crutch.

2) Wearing glasses will not have a deteriorating effect on your natural eyesight, and should be worn as soon as possible to prevent further degradation of your unaided sight.

Thanks to all in advance!

20/40 vision simply means you see at 20 feet what most people see at 40. I would say yes you do need glasses because your eyesight will deteriorate over time. When you can't quite see something, you squint your eye. Why is that? It's because you're bending the lens in your eye (by squeezing it) which adjust the focus, similar to adjusting a camera or a telescope lens. Now the more times you squeeze that lens, the more wear and tear you put on it. Hence you have to squint harder over the years.

In short, yea you probably should look into getting some glasses or contacts. heck with the advances in laser eye surgery maybe look into that to depending on how badly the eyesight starts to effect you.

If you are planning on driving - get the glasses!!

Not wearing contacts or glasses can strain your eyes when trying to look at the board or anything far away really. Straining only makes them worse

You should see a optometrist for a better assessment of your vision. For the most part, you don't need glasses for 20/40 vision. If you have no problems reading the board in school without having to sit up front, you should be ok. The requirement for driving is 20/40. If you pass the DMV vision test, then you wouldn't need glasses for driving.

Meanwhile, you should get your eyes check annually. This way you'd know if your eyes are going worst or not.

Some people with 20/40 don't need glasses. Glasses won't help every person.
Have you ever thought of going to an optometrist? Is it possible that an optometrist could know more than a school nurse?

We learn blurry vision behaviors as an incorrect response to stressfull situations. Strain does not just happen to us. Many people strain their eyesight because they think it will improve it. Strain may give us brief clarity but always gives us longer term blurr. Many people with blurry vision strain their eyes in an effort to improve their vision and always make it worse. Some people with blurry vision relax their eyes and improve their eyesight.

Artificial corrections(glasses, contacts, surgery) don't take away eyestrain, they only change it to a less painful form and so they most often lead to blurrier and blurrier unaided eyesight.
