What would make my chest hurt, near the heart?
I've been teaching on here about my Catholic faith and been running into a lot of stress and maybe eating too much red meat too.

What would make my chest hurt, near the heart?
Additional Details
could it be gas too? I've had heart trouble all my life. and sometimes my chest does hurt.

Often times, the manner in which you sit, the posture which you use may cause the chest to hurt. If this is a consistent condition, get to the cardiologist for a thorough exam.

Relax, many things can make the chest hurt.

Here is a little flow chart you can do to access if you need to visit the doc..If you really need the doc according to this; sell something and go.

More likely: You could be (unknown to you) an asthmatic; or you could have injured your pectorals (chest muscles); you could have had indigestion and reflux in your sleep, some of which could have creeped down your trachea leading to a burning sensation in your chest etc etc

Also if you are under lots of different stresses at once; you could be experiencing symptoms of: panic attacks (which closely mimic heart attack symptoms); trapped nerves; extreme anxiety; etc... Bottom line is that as you are relatively young; its more likely to be stress induced than a clinical problem...RELAX.

Some health tips can help calm down a stressed body:

1) Eat more slowly; properly masticating your food. This will aid proper digestion, and help prevent constipation (a common aggravating factor in panic attacks).

2) Record your daily calorie intake in KCal; and find out if your exceeding your daily recommended intake of 2500 (3000 for athletes or young adults below 25). If you're eating way more than your body needs to survive, side effects could include indigestion and constipation; both of which can lead to stress induced chest pain.

3) Make sure you're eating a balanced diet (read up on this). Too much fat or protein will slow down the flow of food through your gut leading to constipation/indigestion.

4) Limit your sleep to 7.5 hours and try to have your sleep during the hours of darkness (ie wake up before 9am). Too much sleep makes you tired; as does sleeping in daylight.

5) Take some regular exercise.. This helps reduce body tension; aids muscle toning and so improves joint support (helps prevent trapped nerves).

6) Have a nice hot bath a few times a week (helps relax your muscles and improves blood).

7) Spend less time sat down as its not good for the back (where allot of tension can reside).

8) Do some fun things when your body gets run down; and stay away from the cause of stress till its gone.

Common symptoms of panic attacks

* Rapid heart beat, pounding heart or palpitations
* Sweating
* Shaking visibly or inside
* Choking sensations or lump in throat (Globus Hystericus)
* Smothering or shortness of breath sensations
* Chest pain or discomfort
* Nausea, bloating, indigestion or abdominal discomfort
* Dizziness or unsteadiness
* Feeling light-headed
* Derealization (feeling unreal or dreamy)
* Depersonalization (feeling outside yourself or like you don't exist)
* Fear of losing control or going crazy
* Paresthesias (numbness or tingling sensations) in face, extremities or body
* Chills or hot flushes
* Skin losing color
* Blushing or skin blotches
* Urgently needing to urinate or defecate

Stress will cause the heart to hurt. You probably have palpitations as well. They will go away when you relax. It could be gas, you could try Gas X or baking soda mixed in water to burp (which expels gas) or if your bowels move the gas should go away. Eating red meat won't make your chest hurt near the heart. But if you have had heart trouble all your life you need to see a Cardiologist. I don't know where you live but if you live in the U.S. a law was passed a couple years ago that you can't be refused medical treatment because of your inability to pay. Go to the hospital, they have to help you if you live in the U.S. It is the law. If you don't live in the U.S. try to find a free clinic where you live but you need to see a Dr.
