Lady Of The Storm
My cholesterol level is 7.1, and blood pressure is 104/80, and my doctor said that's nothing to worry about
My doctor said I have 4% of a stroke or heart attack when I am older.
Should I worry though?
Additional Details
I don't drink, smoke, and I walk 5 miles a day (walk to work)

I remember listening to a radio 4 show recently where there where older ladies enquiring to high cholesterol levels and the advice was not to worry too much ( too much stress is a factor in heart attacks too) I got the impression it was common for older ladies to have high cholesterol levels. ( apologies of course if you happen to be a quite young lady I'm only saying what i heard) If i where you I'd not worry too much but 7.1 is a bit on the high side so it wouldn't do you any harm to find ways of reducing it. Hey and to think i was a bit worried cos mines 3.2 but i like my chips and beer too much.

7.1 sounds high. I am surprised your doctor didn't advise you on lowering your cholesterol.

I wouldn't worry, but taking good care of yourself now will make for a happier life when you are older.

xx

I am not a dr, but as far as i know your cholesterol is a bit high. Don't stress though, as im sure if the dr wasn't alarmed there isn't an immediate threat, but i would try to work at getting it down a little as it will help you in future years to keep away any heart problems.

I think if you are older (above 40 or 50 or so) and otherwise generally healthy anywhere up to around 6.0 is usually advised as being acceptable, but if you are only a young person it shouldn't really be higher than 4.5 - 5.0. (roughly)

Obvious changes to try to get it down are excercise, foods enriched with plant sterols (these can help reduce cholesterol by up to 10%, and are available in margarine type spreads, yoghurts & milk products), also some other food items such as porridge, rye breads etc & fish oil capsules can assist in lowering it also.

All the best :)

Blood pressure is ok, but cholesterol is on the high side. Surprised he did not advise you on diet / alcholol / smoking.

You have more chance of having a stroke or heart attack if you worry about this to much.If you are healthy then enjoy your life with out worrying all the time.

Your cholestrol is quite high but if the doctor says don't worry baout it then the best thing that you can do is try to keep it under control so that small % doesn't involve you suffering in the long run

7.1 for cholesterol that's a bit high i would say about 5.0 to be on the safe side ask your doctor wot the ideal cholesterol level is

The Lone Gunman
"Normal" bp is 120/80, but there is no such thing as "normal" since we are all different, so 120/80 is kind of an average.
I wouldn't worry! Just take care of yourself, get good sleep and exercise, eat a healthy diet, don't smoke or drink excessively and you should live a long and healthy life!

trust your doctor, if they say there is nothing to worry about, dont worry.

Don't worry - if your doctor gave you this advice I would accept his opinion, after all he is the professional, we are just a bunch of amateurs!

I have no idea what 7.1 means. My total cholesterol is 128, and I know my triglycerides, LDL, and HDL levels.

If your doctor said you have a 4% chance of stroke or heart disease, that's very good. No need to worry unless you massively change your lifestyle (like put on a bunch of weight, take drugs, et cetera).

7.1 in itself tells part of the story, but we need to know the other parts of your lipid profile. If this suggests you have a lot of bad lipids, LDL, and not enough good lipids, HDL, it would make me more inclined to treat you, unless you have a horrendous diet, in which case just eat healthily, and recheck. However, it seems likely you have a genetic preponderance for high cholesterol (familial hypercholesterolaemia, FH), and if you have premature heart disease in the family, I would seriously consider treating you, unless you are planning to get pregnant in the near future (cholesterol lowering tablets are teratogenic).
There is rationale for this, as women with FH have a 30% increased chance of heart disease by the age of 50. Heart disease doesn't develop overnight, it takes time, so early treatment is now advised.

Dyslipidemia is elevation of plasma cholesterol and/or TGs or a low HDL level that contributes to the development of atherosclerosis. Causes may be primary (genetic) or secondary. Diagnosis is by measuring plasma levels of total cholesterol, TGs, and individual lipoproteins. Treatment is dietary changes, exercise, and lipid-lowering drugs.
Cholesterol-3.5 to 6.5 mmol/L (ideal <5.2 mmol/L)
In the UK, mirroring abandoned earlier U.S. practice, nursing students continue to be taught that their patients’ readings should be considered ‘normal’ if in the range:
* Systolic: 110 - 140mmHg
* Diastolic: 70 - 90 mmHg
