If you give a person aspirin, as soon as you suspect he is having a heart attack/stroke, can it save his life?
I remember reading this somewhere. Is it true? Please mention your source...
Additional Details
Yes, save them until they can get medical help...

its not rite apirin is forbidden for heart patients and in stroke,it increses blood pressure and in stroke or heart attack, blood pressure is also incresed if u give aspirin too,it will cause more damage, even death.

its not right statement that aspirin saves patients in attack or stroke.

c_schumacker
The respondant above is absolutely incorrect and assuredly is NOT a trained physician.

It is true as others have said above that aspirin can reduce the severity of an acute heart attack and improve outcomes. It is a well known and widely reported fact so I guess that I don't know why people are not aware of the benefits of aspirin - I mean there are some on this forum who would argue about the value of aspirin - despite its overwhelmingly proven values.

Strokes however usually have an embolic (a blood clot from another place) rather than a thrombus (a blood clot) which is more typical of a heart attack. Therefore due to the differences of their sources, aspirin has less utility with a stroke than with a heart attack. The clot has already formed and is causing a problem at a remote position in a stroke. In a heart attack the clot is in the process of forming and potentially blocking off the artery - giving the aspirin a chance to work. (aspirin is a platelet inhibitor).

A single full strength aspirin (of any brand) chewed is appropriate for someone complaining of sudden chest pain...911 and an evaluation by the ER to follow, of course.

ok I just had a heart attack they gave me, the fire people gave me an asprin..nothin felt better...they gave me a shot of nitro...nothin morphrine..nothin and another shot of nitro as i was gettin into the ambulance..i still flat lined about 7 min later...i was just lucky where i was and the fact that epople around me called 911...
so basically....call 911 do as they say and get urself to a hospital.

It will help, but they still need an ambulance ride to ER.

YES THIS IS THE PERHAPS ONLY THING WHICH WILL HAVE A GOOD EFFECT ON HEART ATTACK/STROKE BUT IT SHOULD BE GIVEN AS SOLUBLE ASPIRIN !ASPIRIN GIVES A VERY GOOD INSTANT EFFECT WHEN IT IS TAKEN AS SOLUBLE OR DISPERSIBLE FORM !MORE OVER TO GO FURTHER I WOULD SAY TO KEEP SUB LINGUAL NITRATE TABLET ALWAYS WITH AND IN THE MONEY VALLET NO MATTER IT REMAINS THERE FOR YEARS TOGETHER WITHOUT ANY USE OF IT BUT IT IS A MARVELOUS THING THAT GIVES INSTANT EFFECT IN HEART ATTACK!WITHIN FEW SECONDS 1 I ALWAYS ADVISE MY RISKY PATIENT TO KEEP THIS WITH THEM ! ALWAYS YouRsmE

Aspirin can help prevent or reduce the severity of a heart attack. Taking aspirin isn't advised during a stroke, because not all strokes are caused by blood clots. Most strokes are caused by clots, but some are caused by ruptured blood vessels. Taking aspirin could potentially make these bleeding strokes more severe.

Definitely give it to them, but don't assume it'll SAVE their life. You still need to get them the hell to a hospital.

mago
YES..heart attacks and strokes can be caused by decreased blood flow to the heart muscle or the brain. The blood vessel may be partially blocked or completely blocked by a blood clot or plaque build up. Either way the blood carrying oxygen cannot get through. Aspirin "thins" the blood by interfering with the blood clotting ability.
At first signs of a stoke or heart attack, chewing one aspirin may be enough to prevent the complete obstuction of the blood vessel. No blood = no oxygen = death

YES, YES, YES.
it's been known and proven throughout the medical community for a long time. almost everyone can benefit from a low dose asprin (81mg) daily with the exception of children and people with bleeding disorders and ulcer disease. you should ask your docs advise before starting an asprin regimine.

Depending on the dose,
he must be given up to (300mg) >>> dispersable soluble tablets!!
and not just the (75mg protective aspirin)..
which should be done in hospitals, where he'll be given: (for heart attacks):
Oxygen, Metoclopromide(anti-emetic), diamorphine (pain reliever) and Aspirin 300mg (antiplatelet)

yes it can have a effect on the outcome of a heart attack.bayer is the best if you have it but any aspirin will do.my source is personal experience..my dad had a heart attack 6 years ago we made him take bayer when he was having signs and when he got to the hospital the Dr said it saved his life.

Yes, because of aspirin's blood-thinning
properties. Of course, you still need to call 911
and get the person to a hospital immediately.

If some one is having a heart attack giving them an aspirin will reduce the severity of the heart attack by keeping the clot that is causing it from getting worse.

If they are having a stroke it could be caused by either a clot or a bleed. If it is a clot the aspirin would help, if it is a bleed the aspirin would make it worse. Aspirin should not be given to a stroke patient until they have been seen by a doctor.

Keep in mind that it can 30 minutes for aspirin to reach the blood stream after swallowing. If your friend died before the paramedics arrived aspirin would not have helped him.
