I have high blood pressure?
I have high blood pressure and was wondering what I can do to lower it with food and exercise. I get massive headaches whenever my pressure goes up. I am not on any medication yet. I go to the doctor tomorrow. Pressure was 180/116 two days ago. I went straight to the hospital where they gave me a pill to lower it. BTW, I just found out I have this after I lost my job last week. You should medicate first then seek diet and exercise to eventually replace the medications IF the diet and body weight are the issue. If you are hereditary hypertension, your only alternative may be the meds. Good luck, but DON'T stop taking the meds when you begin

You need to be on blood pressure medication, exercise and diet may be in an option to help manage your BP long term, but until that occurs, it's vital to listen to your doctor and get the pressure down. High blood pressure can damage all of your vital organs.. leading to worse problems down the road. It is uncommon to feel physical symptoms of hypertension (another word for high blood pressure), you should feel lucky that you can feel your BP when it is elevated. Headache is the most common symptom experienced in the rare event that patients do experience symptoms from hypertension.

Bottom line: listen to your physician. Ask if your blood pressure can be managed with alternative means, such as diet and exercise. Get informed using credible sources such as WebMD, eMedicine Health, and Mayo Clinic.

There are many things you can do without medication to help lower your blood pressure. These changes can lower your blood pressure some, but they will be unlikely to bring you down to the goal of < 140/90. A blood pressure that elevated would likely require medication in addition to these lifestyle modification. Dietary changes can help improve your blood pressure. This includes decreasing your salt intake to less than 2 grams daily, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables. The diet associated with the greatest reduction in blood pressure is the DASH diet, which includes a lot of fruits and vegetables. I will leave a link about it if you are interested. Regular aerobic exercise will also lower your blood pressure. This can be any aerobic exercise you would like, such as walking, running, swimming, biking, etc. You should do this for at least 1 hour 5 times weekly, but you can start lower than this if you are out of shape. If you are overweight then even a small amount of weight loss will improve your blood pressure. Also if you drink in excess you should reduce this to less than 2 drinks daily if you are male or 1 drink daily if you are female. Excessive alcohol intake is associated with elevated blood pressure.
