Can i use alcohol after Aortic Valve replacement?

i suggest u strictly dont use it

not advised

No pls.lost my relation who took alcohol after his surgery !!he has left behind his wife and three daughters.!!!!!!

First, it depends on whether you just had this surgery done or if this is a well-healed condition. Next, it depends on what medications you might be taking that would interact with alcohol. You need to be asking your doctor these questions.

gangadharan nair
It is better not to consume alcohol as it may lead to alcoholic cardiomyopathy (a type of dilated cardiomyopathy). Your heart might have already enlarged due to valvular heart disease and ejection fraction might have reduced now.

After valve replacement surgery, the first question is not when it was done, but what kind of valve was used. Because after the surgery, the patient is put on anticoagulants (blood thinners) for various periods depending on this fact.

Patients with a) biological tissue valves can discontinue anticoagulation therapy within three months of implantation, but those with b) mechanical valves must take an anticoagulant (aspirin, warfarin, or a combination of the two) for the rest of their lives.
Refer: http://www.surgeryencyclopedia.com/La-Pa/Mitral-Valve-Replacement.html

If your surgery involves (a) and you had surgery less that 3 months ago, you are on blood thinners. In (b) you are on anticoagulants all the time (unless you defy the doctor's order).

Now. This is crucial. Researchers have confirmed that drinking even moderate amounts of alcohol can affect blood coagulation -- acting as a "blood thinner".
Refer: http://alcoholism.about.com/od/health/a/blacer051015.htm

So, alcohol + blood thinner = blood thinner + blood thinner = risk of dangerous bleeding. Therefore, if you had biological tissue valve 3 months ago and and are off blood thinners then it is OK to drink.
If you got mechanical valve and taking your blood thinners regularly, then, no sire, you shouldn't drink. Take good care of yourself.

Well it depends on whether you will be on blood thinners (Warfarin/Coumadin) after the surgery. Alcohol can thin the blood and increase the risk of accidents. This is concerning in a person on a blood thinner like Warfarin/Coumadin, because it could increase the risk of serious bleeding. People can still drink alcohol on Coumadin, but it should be in limited amounts. Excessive alcohol use is not a good idea for anyone. Aortic valve replacement in itself is not a contraindication to alcohol use, but it should be in moderation. Moderation is defined as 2 drinks daily in men and 1 drink daily in women. It is always best to discuss this with the cardiac surgeon performing the procedure and/or your Cardiologist. Good luck.
