Can Claritin D give me high blood pressure?
I am a white male 30 years old 180lb @ 5 foot11 inches. I recently went to the Doctor because of a cold. They told me my blood pressure was 140/110. I was taking Claritin D for 2-3 weeks straight at the time. I have been off the Claritin for 4-5 days and my blood pressure, (while sitting at work) is 160/100. Is the claritin still in my system? My blood pressure was checked a month ago and it was normal 126/82. What is going on and when should my BP drop back down to normal levels.

Loratadine is used to temporarily relieve the symptoms of hay fever (allergy to pollen, dust, or other substances in the air) and other allergies. These symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes, nose, or throat. Loratadine is also used to treat itching and redness caused by hives. However, loratadine does not prevent hives or other allergic skin reactions. Loratadine is in a class of medications called antihistamines. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.
Loratadine is also available in combination with pseudoephedrine (Sudafed, others). This monograph only includes information about the use of loratadine alone. If you are taking the loratadine and pseudoephedrine combination product, read the information on the package label or ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
Consult your doctor or a pharmacist.
Please see the web pages for more details on Loratadine (generic name) Claritin (brand name).

It could be the claritin..you could also be developing high blood pressure. One low reading doesn't eliminate high blood pressure. I suggest reading the link below. If your blood pressure is already slightly elevated...then yes..the claritin could increase it. Keep an eye on your blood pressure. Perhaps discontinue the Claritin and see if it goes back down to normal, with several readings. I have high blood pressure (since my 20's) and cannot take Claritin.

its true, claritin can increase your blood pressure. i went to the doctor today because i have had a sore throat for a while now, they took my blood pressure and she said it was a little elevated, i told here what i was taking which was advil and last afternoon i took 1 claratin (generic Walgreen's brand) she said claritin can increase your blood pressure especially if you have other medical problems like migraines or hypoglycemia/diabetes.

try going with out it for a week and switch to another kind
your prob figured your problem out with it costing you a office call

The pseudoephedrine in the Claritin D can theoretically raise your blood pressure because it can constrict your blood vessels. This constriction may cause high blood pressure but the effect is usually very slight in most people. The only reason I can think of that the Claritin D would cause prolonged hypertension is if you were taking more than the recommended dose for 2 -3 weeks.
Has your lifestyle changed at all in the last month? Diet? Exercise? Stress? All of these can cause high blood pressure. If your high blood pressure really is due to the Claritin D, it should resolve itself. If you would still like chronic allergy relief, consider the Claritin without the pseudoephedrine.
