I've had diabetes for 8 years,
And i know people say it should be under 6.5 but that's really hard to do.

i do not have T1DM but my recommendation is to keep it at 6.5 or below.

If you follow a healthy diet and take your medication as your doctor prescribes, your A1C level should be close to normal.

You should consider using an insulin pump...it really helps you keep your sugar levels under control and it will help you get your A1C level closer to normal.

You should always aim for an A1C under 7. That will help to avoid complications in the future.

I've had diabetes t1 for 17 years (diagnosed at a year old) and my a1c's have been all over the place. They've been as high as 12 and recently they've all been in the low 6's.

My son is 16. His a1c is never that low. 7.5 last time but this number fluctuates quite a bit. We're happy when it's under 8.

Most doctors will be very happy with you if you get to a 7.0. This is a good number to be at, even though some doctors want you to be lower, most doctors realize that their patients can't do it. That is why most will ask you to try to get to 7.0. An average blood sugar reading of 154 will give you an A1C of 7. Many doctors and nutritionists are teaching their patients about something new called eAG. (estimated average glucose) Trying to keep your average blood sugar readings around a certain level can make it possible and much easier to reach a good A1C level. When you know what that average level is, you have a goal that seems much easier to reach. If you keep your blood sugar readings close to 140, your A1C would be 6.5. Here is the chart my doctor gave me. This newer method is being used by all types of diabetics (1, 2 and gestational). This information was also published in Diabetes Forcast.

A1C (%) ............. eAG (average BS )

5 ................. ........ 97
5.5 .................... 111
6 ..................... 126
6.5 .................... 140
7 .......................... 154
7.5 .......................... 169
8 .......................... 183
8.5 .......................... 197
9 .......................... 212
9.5.......................... 226
10.......................... 240
10.5 .......................... 255
11 .......................... 269
11.5 .......................... 283
12........................... 298
Sorry, it would not let me line things up properly.
But you get the idea

This helps people that think they have to have such tight control, to loosen up a little, and actually make it where they eat a little better, and obtain better health. It also shows that you do not have to keep your blood sugars as low as was thought to have a good A1C. Most doctors don't want you to have an A1C of below 6.5 because it can cause too much hypoglycemia, which can be very dangerous. I love this method, and it is easy for me to keep my blood sugar in range this way, since it does not actually have to be below 120. Progress is wonderful !!
