Can Lovastatin cause the blood sugar to be higher?

the_donut
A valid question since other cholesterol treatments (such as Advicor, Nicotinic acid - niacin) can indeed increase blood glucose levels.

In Merck's studies of Mevacor (the Lovastatin brand name), they found that "MEVACOR had no clinically important effect on glycemic control or on the dose requirement of oral hypoglycemic agents." In other words, no effect on blood sugar.

If you have diabetes, Mevacor/Lovastatin can lower the risk of a heart attack by 24-24%, so it's well-worth taking if it's been prescribed.

Yes, if lovastatin is combined with Niacin.
