McDonald's, preservatives in our food, high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners. Poisons. Ever noticed how many men in their 20's are balding? I think it's the same stuff they eat.

unfortunately, we are bombarded with preservatives
and chemicals, our fruits and veggies are sprayed w/
insecticides, not to metnion, air pollution'' so it is
no wonder we are coming down with it more, however
smoking, while not to enitirely blame it, does contribute
to some deaths; also our diets, fastfood, fats, and large
portions all contribute to obesity, which, I hear is a cancer
risk.

There are as many causes of cancer as there are cancers. Some of them are preventable (like limiting sun exposure or not smoking) but many of them are not. There is no 'pat' answer.

Yes, the foods we eat and the air we breathe contribute, but genetics also plays a strong roll in it as well as the geographic area where you live. (There are cancer 'hot beds' throughout the world.. I know.. I'm from one.)
People are also living relatively longer than they were a generation or two ago, thus allowing pathologic conditions like cancer to emerge since the person is living longer.

Avoiding cancer is a crap shoot, but there are things that can be done to reduce a person's risk... they are the things you hear on TV... limit sun exposure, don't smoke, get regular exams by your doctor... check for changes in yourself that just don't seem right.. eat healthy, exercise... all that stuff. Another thing to remember: Different cancers have vastly different survival rates. Most skin cancers are very very treatable, but things like lung or ovarian cancer have a high mortality rate.
Hope this helps.....

I've used Chinese medicine for over 20 years. Couple of years ago i asked a Chinese trained doctor (who used to practice in China before he came to the west, he was close to 50), if there was cancer in China as such. He said that in the 1970s stomach cancer and throat cancer became more common.
Babies are born with up to 200 chemicals in their blood. They know so because a big study was done on umbilical cords. (a search with 'chemicals in umbilical cord' should throw it out)
Maybe our genetics are affected by all the chemicals? Nobody knows.
I think a lot of it is to do with emotions ...

i feel that it is in the food that we eat now days ...look at all the stuff that they add to it

the environment also has alot to do with cancer...power lines and nuclear plant emmissions...pollution from factories, vehicles etc., chenicals...some have carciogens in there ingredients etc. So many things can cause cancer and that is why it is so important that we eat food rich in antioxidants, drink purified water etc. Our best defense is what we put into our bodies if the environment that surrounds us is against us.

There are so many other causes for cancer than just smoking. Also certain practices and materials used before their effects were noticed and then stopped are now being spotted and cancer appearing, such as certain paint spraying practices, asbestos etc. People may have worked with dangerous subtances before their effects were seen and now it's taking effect. Some people are just unlucky, others develop it through their lifestyle, etc.

Sometimes I wonder if cancer was always there but suddenly it hits close to home so we feel like it's all over the place. But I don't know.. within three years my grandpa, my uncle, and my dad all died of different kinds of cancer and complications with the cancer. I've gone through a lot with it and I guess there is no way to really explain why it feels like so many people have cancer.

It is not that there are more cancers, just that we are better at detecting them in modern medicine. Many people who died in the past probably didn't have the diagnosis, despite having the disease.

I am sure alot of cancers are caused by our change in lifestyle and diet.
Mediterranean countries have a far lower incidence of cancer as they eat a much healthier diet full of fruit and veg which provide much needed antioxidants that help to protect the body against degenerative diseases like cancer , heart disease, strokes etc. They also eat alot less red meat, sugar and refined carbohydrates
They live more active and stress free lives both of which can have a positive or negative effect on your imune system respectively.

To protect yourself against this modern day epidemic try adopting the Mediterranean diet, excercise more and remove junk food from your diet.

I know its ridiculous. When I was young life was all smiles and giggles then I turned into an adult and learned about the 1 in 3 stat and the horrors alot of us are in for.

Focus should be on cures not prevention.

Illiteracy is more of a cancer on society, but you don't seem to be too bothered about that.
Should you not have asked 'Why are so many...'

There are more than 100 types of cancers; any part of the body can be affected.
In 2005, 7.6 million people died of cancer - 13% of the 58 million deaths worldwide.
More than 70% of all cancer deaths occur in low and middle income countries.
Worldwide, the 5 most common types of cancer that kill men are (in order of frequency): lung, stomach, liver, colorectal and oesophagus
Worldwide, the 5 most common types of cancer that kill women are (in the order of frequency): breast, lung, stomach, colorectal and cervical
Tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of cancer in the world.
One fifth of all cancers worldwide are caused by a chronic infection, for example human papillomavirus (HPV) causes cervical cancer and hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes liver cancer.
A third of cancers could be cured if detected early and treated adequately.
All patients in need of pain relief could be helped if current knowledge about pain control and palliative care were applied.
40% of cancer could be prevented, mainly by not using tobacco, having a healthy diet, being physically active and preventing infections that may cause cancer.
