Just Wondering
How do I build up my b-12 levels?
I have been fighting angular chelitis for months. I finally figured out that it wasn't just chapped lips and went to the Dr. She sent me for a blood test - and sure enough I have a B-12 deficiency.

This completely makes sense -- I am exhausted for no reason, brain fog, vertigo lately, frequent loose stools, and I have had depression symptoms on and off throughout my life. I even have had this mysterious nerve pain in my hand I have heard described for B 12 deficiency!

The challenge for me -- is that I eat very well. I also supplement - I guess just not enough. I have been taking a sublingual b supplment for years on and off. Other vitamins, enzymes, and other herbs. I belong to a farm co-op and I eat as much organic as I can afford. I really do my best. I am not a vegetarian. I eat red meat a few times a week, chicken, fish, and eggs frequently too. Not a day goes by that I don't get at least 2 big servings of protein.

What more can I do.......I might be loosing my health insurance, so I am afraid to get into getting b-12 shots.

Thank you.

WOW I can get b-12 shots w/o prescription?!!! THANK YOU!

The B-12 shots are the way to go. They will really help get your levels up. It shouldn't be expensive.

It sounds like you are doing what you can. I think carbs such as cereals are high in B12 too, so make sure you get enough of them. It may just take some time for your levels to build up- keep up the good diet and hopefully you'll feel a bit better soon.

YA Junkie
I was a vegetarian for over 20 years and then wound up with anemia. There are various kinds of anemia, but what I got was vitamin B12-related anemia.

The following linnk might help. http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGLL_enUS336US336&q=foods+vitamin+b12

I went back to eating meat and once a month I get vitamin B12 injections from my doctor's nurse. My anemia is gone.If you are losing your insurance, I would try to get as many B12 injections as possible quickly.

There are alternative health doctors who give patients megadoses of intravenous vitamin injections. You can ask for lots of B12. However, these doctors usually charge a whole lot of money and are not covered by insurance. I hope you can find a solution.

Doctor J
Did your doctor determine WHY you are B12 deficient? With your other symptoms it would be wise to get tested for Celiac Disease. Every symptom you describe can BEST be explained by Celiac Disease.

Best wishes and good luck.

what about your calcium supplies?? without sufficient calcium you'll never absorb your B12 or B6 supplies effectively ....... eat more leafy and green vegies (rich in calcium and magnesium) or supplement with a coral calcium powder (easy to assimilate) ....... that would account for the icky nerve pain in your hand actually.... i get nasty nerve pain in my legs and hands when i haven't taken my calcium ....... it would also explain the fatigue and exhaustion, brain fog, dizzy spells, depression........ they're all symptoms of B12 and iron deficiency ..... both of those need calcium for effective assimilation.

and vitamin D is needed too ...... get 15 mins of safe sun exposure daily or eat fresh salmon or tuna 3 x weekly.

the b complex of vitamins works best as a whole group (synergistically) ...... so to supplement with only one will only ever serve to throw the rest of the complex out of balance.... supplement with them as a group if you must supplement ie ~ B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, folic acid, choline, inositol, biotin, PABA.

oh, and ditch the calcium thieves too or dramatically minimise them if you ingest any... ie ~ sodas and pop, alcohol, excess caffeine, excessive amounts of processed sugar and processed salt and excessive animal protein and saturated fat will all rip the calcium right out of your bones ...... as will laxatives...... and most otc and prescription meds.

peace baby

Lola
I'm taking B-12 sublingual right now. The shots can actually be bought off the internet. They really are not too expensive @ all. I would buy them in bulk. It sounds like you are doing everything that you possibly can. I have the same symptoms as you...perhaps not as intense..but believe me, I have other issues that even it out :-./ grr...

I would go for the sublingual vitamin B12 if you can get hold of that....cheaper and easier to take/administer than shots. Personally I think shots should only be administered by a nurse or doctor.

Sublingual vitamin B12 is well absorbed compared to tablets and I expect is much cheaper to purchase relative to B12 shots....and of course easy to take.

You may have a genetic higher requirement for vitamin B12 or it is possible you lack intrinsic factor needed for B12 absorption via the intestinal route.....and that can often be a problem in the older generation.
