Herbs for healing the brain from head trauma?
anyone know any?

You've given no details at all what you mean by "head trauma"
Is it a bruise on the forhead, a mild concussion, or severe head injury resulting in coma??

In any case, there is no role for untested or unproven herbal treatments. Depending on the severity...which you haven't mentioned...the treatment may be nothing..to observation...to admission to an ICU with intubation.

Many people who survive major head traumas will have psychological problems after they recover, and may have chronic headaches, personality changes, emotional lability or memory problems. Again...there are no herbs that can help with any of this.

Gary Y has given you a terrific answer. Read it and give him the 10 points
Ignore Sudhaker...he has no medical knowledge and gives advice that is not evidence based or scientific
==========================
Excellent rebuttal to Sudhaker by Rhianna, BTW

Rhianna
I can only echo what Gary Y, Dave and Skep have said. We have no idea what sort of head trauma you have or indeed anything about your medical history. No one can make a virtual diagnosis and/or even suggest a remedy. See your GP please.

While herbs are plausible, they have little evidence of efficacy and safety and for this reason they shouldn't be recommended (at the moment).
======================================…
Lets have a look at the problem with Sudhakar B's answer:

“I am glad you are opting for natural healing rather than chemical gooey called medicine”

The problems with you is that you don't understand science. You couldn't live without chemicals, everything that exists is made of chemicals. Without it, you'd die of dehydration and you wouldn't be able to breathe. Human life expectancy has increased as a result of chemical based medicine. You cannot attribute cleaner living and sanitation to the doubled life expectancy alone. If that were the sole reason we are all living longer we wouldn't be getting the cold and flu viruses as often would we? Think about it..
Why is something better and safer simply because it's natural? This does not follow. Life, in terms of health and has improved because of unnatural things. Life exists 100% because of chemicals. FAIL

“Doctors are trained in managing disease and not in managing health.”

That does not really make sense, but lets ingnore the false statement that we only manage illnesses and not treat them; symptom management alone improves health. If I didn't take my inhalers, I'd wheeze constantly and my quality of life would be reduced. Right now, I can do everything a non-asthmatic can do... I run long distances and ride horses.
The alties claim we treat symptoms only, this is simply not true. Homoeopathy for example (something you advocate) treats nothing but symptoms. FAIL

"In many cases herbs provides the same degree of therapeutic value as prescription - but with virtually no side”

Wrong. Herbs contain active ingredients and therefore have the ability to cause side effects. The good thing about science is that we isolate the useful chemical in the herb so you don't have to eat a field full of herbs to get the desired effect. Conventional drugs are also tested for toxicity, efficacy and safety. Herbals are essentially unregulated. 25% of conventional medicine is derived from herbs. FAIL

“1 in 3 prescription drugs are based on natural plant”

Ya I know, if you read your answer back, you'll find you have contradicted yourself with this statement. How can all conventional medicine be bad if 1/4 is derived from herbs?

“Herbs actually heal the body along with other fibres in the plant to cushion the toxicity, but when you isolate one”

Try eating posion ivy and see what happens....(obviously don't it's dangerous). FAIL

Happy secular Good Friday Sudhakar B and thanks for the laugh.

dave
It's very likely that anyone with a head trauma would not already be under medical advice and it would be wise to follow this advice.

Unknown herbal mixtures could easily interact with any existing treatment so make sure you check with a medical professional first. Definitely do NOT take the advice of any Yahoo loonies who are playing at doctors; few have any medical training and worse, do not care what advice they dispense or what the consequences could be.

Don't even think about it. Talk to your doctor.

-------
EDIT: I'd like to highlight a danger of asking such a question on the internet, and especially in an alt med forum. Sudhakar has advised you to use a certain herb, even though he has never seen you, he has no idea what your condition is, what your medical history is, or what medications you may be on already. Yet he is happy to go ahead and recommend a potentially dangerous treatment.

Herbs that have a medicinal effect are basically crude drugs. They still contain active chemicals. Sudhakar has not thought to advise you things like side effects, risks, interactions and contraindications. He didn't even provide a dosage. This is typical behavior from alties, is I'm sure you will agree that it is a dangerous way to go.

So, I have looked up information for Gotu kola - there is little quality research or data available (another red flag), but this is what I have found:

From: http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-753-GOTU+KOLA.aspx?activeIngredientId=753&activeIngredientName=GOTU+KOLA&source=2

'Gotu kola is POSSIBLY SAFE when taken by mouth or applied to the skin appropriately. However, there is concern that gotu kola might cause liver damage in some people. It can also cause other side effects including stomach upset, nausea, and itching. Too much gotu kola might also cause drowsiness.

Special Precautions & Warnings:
Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Gotu kola is POSSIBLY SAFE in pregnant women when applied to the skin. But don’t take it by mouth. Not enough is known about the safety of taking gotu kola orally. There also isn’t enough known about the safety of using gotu kola during breast-feeding. Avoid using it if you are nursing.

Liver disease: There is concern that gotu kola might cause liver damage. People who already have a liver disease such as hepatitis should avoid using gotu kola. It might make liver problems worse.

Surgery: Gotu kola might cause too much sleepiness if combined with medications used during and after surgery. Stop using gotu kola at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery."

"Major Interaction Do not take this combination:
Sedative medications (CNS depressants) interacts with GOTU KOLA
Large amounts of gotu kola might cause sleepiness and drowsiness. Medications that cause sleepiness are called sedatives. Taking gotu kola along with sedative medications might cause too much sleepiness.
Some sedative medications include clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), phenobarbital (Donnatal), zolpidem (Ambien), and others.

Moderate Interaction Be cautious with this combination
Medications that can harm the liver (Hepatotoxic drugs) interacts with GOTU KOLA
Gotu kola might harm the liver. Taking gotu kola along with medication that might also harm the liver can increase the risk of liver damage.
Some medications that can harm the liver include acetaminophen (Tylenol and others), amiodarone (Cordarone), carbamazepine (Tegretol), isoniazid (INH), methotrexate (Rheumatrex), methyldopa (Aldomet), fluconazole (Diflucan), itraconazole (Sporanox), erythromycin (Erythrocin, Ilosone, others), phenytoin (Dilantin), lovastatin (Mevacor), pravastatin (Pravachol), simvastatin (Zocor), and many others."

"The following doses have been studied in scientific research:
BY MOUTH:
For blood circulation problems in the legs (venous insufficiency): 60-180 mg daily of gotu kola extract."

As you can see, this is not just some 'safe, natural, herb'. Its a drug, with little information available about its full effects. Furthermore, herbal drugs are uncontrolled and unstandardized. The quality and quantity of active ingredient can vary from season to season, supplier to supplier.

My best advice is to talk to your doctor before you take anything.

-------
EDIT: Sudhakar, you nearly got me there for a minute, but then I realized its April Fools day. Very funny.

-------
EDIT: Sudhakar, oh you were serious? Really? Ok..

“Doctors are trained in managing disease and not in managing health.” This is a false dilemma fallacy, but in any case it has nothing to do with you giving bad advice.

“In many cases herbs provides the same degree of therapeutic value as prescription - but with virtually no side effects.” No side effects? How do you know this? Anything that has an effect can have side effects. The problem with herbal medicine is that it has had so very little testing and its potential risks, side effects, interactions etc, are unknown. It is false and irresponsible to say that herbs have virtually no side effects.

“In fact, herbal medicine is so powerful that nearly 1 in 3 prescription drugs are based on natural plant sources - which begs the obvious question-why not just get it straight from the source?” I think you mean it raises the question. The answer is because science can isolate active chemicals to optimize and improve their biological and physiochemical properties. This is why herbs are called crude drugs.

“Herbs actually heal the body along with other fibres in the plant to cushion the toxicity” This sounds like nonsense, but at least you admit that herbs are toxic (toxic usually means side effects btw).

“it lacks other things which nature intended thus leading to natural healing” What other things? Nature evolved herbs to heal sick humans? Evidence please.

“synthetic doesn't heal but simply cover up the symptioms.” You’ve never heard of antibiotics?

“you do not have to be rocket scientist to prescribe the herbs” I couldn't have said that better myself. No medical training is required at all. Don’t you see the danger there?

“the chemical guey called medicine where you need to bow down to the pressures of giant pharma lest you prescribe otherwise.” Weasel words. Pharmaceuticals save or improve the lives of hundreds of millions of people every year, your big pharma conspiracy theory can’t be universally supported, and it certainly does not excuse your recklessness in answering this question.

I am glad you are opting for natural healing rather than chemical gooey called medicine. The
best herb would be chinese herb called gotu kola. In indian ayurveda it is called as brahmi.
Consuming decoction or better, ready made herbal solution is available at any indian shop in usa
called Shankapushpi containing extracts of two herbs reputed for healing the brain.
Good luck and God bless. Cheers! :o)

Edit: This is in reply to Gary's comments.
Doctors are trained in managing disease and not in
in managing health. Modern health care system is more
like sick care.
In many cases herbs provides the same degree of therapeutic value as prescription - but with virtually no side
effects. In fact, herbal medicine is so powerful that nearly
1 in 3 prescription drugs are based on natural plant
sources - which begs the obvious question-why not just get
it straight from the source?
Herbs actually heal the body along with other fibres in the plant to cushion the toxicity, but when you isolate one
ingredient and produce it chemically synthetically it lacks other things which nature intended thus leading to natural
healing while synthetic doesn't heal but simply cover up the
symptioms. By the way you do not have to be rocket
scientist to prescribe the herbs unlike the chemical guey
called medicine where you need to bow down to the
pressures of giant pharma lest you prescribe otherwise.
Har har ha ha ha.
Edit: When you are cornered you know how to squeeze
out by hiding under April Fools day excuse. Not wanting
to reply because you cannot top it. Har har ha ha ha.
