Why do I keep coughing and spitting & how to make it stop?
Two-three days ago, at night, I started randomly coughing before going to sleep. And it's not those super harsh kinds, and my throat isn't sore. My throat feels like something's there, but in the way bottom.

and i'm not allergic to anything. But I think it's dust or whatever that went down. Though, I drank coughing medicine and stuff.

Everytime I cough, there's like saliva that comes out, and I find myself spitting out. And I can't throw up, but like I'm spitting a lot when I'm coughing.
My dad smokes, but I don't think it's because of that.

I don't think it's serious enough to notify a doctor, but tell me if it sounds serious enough to you.

You might notice that your dad smokes more often after dinner. If you are in the same room with him after he smokes you are getting close to the same amount of smoke as he is. In the smoke are a number of chemicals that cause the little hairs in you throat and lungs to go numb. Those hairs keep saliva and mucus from sliding further down you air ways causing you to cough to remove the excess moister or Flem. You might want to check your air filter. And always if the problem persist see you doctor. No one and I mean no one on the Internet is authorized to give medical advice, and if they are they won't do so over the net.

Try mucinex hun. Mucinex breaks up mucus that causes chest congestion. It loosens and thins out mucus.

You need to be clearer about the "spitting" that comes out when you cough. Do you mean you're coughing up mucus?

If you're coughing up mucus and it's colored yellow to green, you may need to see the doctor. You may have a chest infection such as bronchitis

Do/did you have any head congestion?
Sometimes when the congestion from the head sinuses breaks up (which is a good thing), it slides down the throat (drains or decongests) to the stomach. If it's in the throat when you lie down, it irritates the throat and causes coughing and you may spit out some of the draining head congestion (again a good thing). Also, yellow to green tint means you may need to see a doc, it could be a sign of a sinus infection.

Your dad smoking most certainly adds to the problem. Stay away from second hand smoke!

If you have an infection either bronchial of sinus, most are viral and self limiting-meaning they will go away in 7 to 10 days. After that time if it still persists, it may be bacterial and an antibiotic may be needed.

The best thing to start doing is to thin the mucus by drinking plenty of WATER-that does mean soda, coffee, juice.... Also over the counter expectrant like Mucinex or Robitussin-along with the WATER will help (look for the active ingredient of guaifenesin). Call the doc if you don't improve after that 7 to 10 days or if you start getting worse.

Dr. George Nowak, M.D.
You are describing post-nasal drip. It feels as though there is something caught near the bottom of the throat, but it is difficult to cough up; it can also be extremely irritating. It is caused by build-up in the sinus cavity that is caused by a virus (ie. cold) or perhaps sinusitis. When you lie down to sleep at night, this liquid, mucosa build-up drips down into the back of the throat. In response to the feeling that there may be something in the throat, you may feel nauseous and you will generate excess saliva. (Nausea may also be induced by the discharge traveling to the stomach.) Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) will help to alleviate post-nasal drip: it constricts blood vessels to decrease the generation of the sinus liquid. You may also start to see other cold symptoms develop, as post-nasal drip is often a sign that a cold is developing. If you feel markedly worse, consult your doctor. And, lastly, stay away from the smoke. This will only irritate your the your bronchial tubes even more! Hope this helps!
