Someone has to watch whether it's a trainee or a nurse due to laws about the doctor being alone with you. Big deal! Don't worry about it.

I would, because these "trainees" need to learn somehow. They are required to have so many clinicl hours which is basically like hands on training. If no one would let them watch them how will they learn, and eventually we would start running out of our doctors.

Probably not. I let the trainee's come in after I had a cesarean and I regretted it. I felt extremely uncomfortable. I don't have time for that crap. Let someone else be their test monkey.

I hate having pap's done. Absolutely horrible. But they are for your own health. How do you think your doctor learned the protocol for a pap smear? Probably from watching another doctor somewhere else on the planet. That trainee has been instructed through many years of medical school of the level of professionalism he/she must display. I think this must be answered personally. If you truly are that uncomfortable with a doctor-in-the-making observing a common medical practice, then tell your doctor that.

They do it all the time. I have a female doctor. She has female trainees. It's not like we all don't have the same stuff. It's not like they don't spend all day looking at the same stuff. Personally, I wouldn't want to be an OB/GYN because I wouldn't want to spend all day looking at *that*.

Where else are the trainees going to learn to do pap smears themselves? As long as the trainee looked legit (nursing or medical school badge, etc.)
Most importantly, if I trusted my doctor, I would probably say okay.

I have no problem with an observation of a routine pap. What I did have a problem with was an appointment when he (my EX-doctor) introduced me to his intern and then proceeded to tell me and my husband that I was miscarrying our baby. It was a huge blow and I didn't appreciate the awkward audience! I got a new doctor after that.

I know you said to all women, but I have to say that as a male nurse it's very important that students get to participate in everything. How else are we going to have new nurses and doctors. As a male nurse I had a really hard time learning new procedures that involved women because most refused to be seen by a male nurse. P.S. yes I'm straight.

Yes I would allow it. I am a student nurse, we all have to learn somewhere, we are professionals as well, it's not like he's just asking you to allow some random layman be there to watch. Support the learning experience unless it makes you really really uncomfortable.
