Periods and lies?
I'm 15 and havn'e started my periods. It's really getting to me because I lie to my freinds every month, practically all the people I know I have lied to (except my mom and sister). My sister knows that I lie to them and keeps it a secret for me, but I don't think that it is fair for her to keep this secret. I really don't know what to do! Please help!

I started mine at 13 but was one of the late ones in my class and felt the same. I am now 52 and still having them! So don't worry you are late. If you are healthy they will start soon enough and you'll soon be wishing the opposite. All girls are different.

I wouldn't be too concerned as you are only 15. I started my period at 13 years old but be glad you don't have one right now. You will get one when your body matures more. Are you at a healthy weight? Your body will automatically know when to menstruate.

Different people advance at different rates....thin, athletic girls ALWAYS start "late"....16 - 18 is normal. Lots of things influence the onset of the menses. Do not worry, as long as you are healthy in all other areas, this too will come; and you will wish it never had!!! God bless

It's nobody's business (especially your friends) whether or not you've started your period. What are they the Period Patrol that you have to report to every month. That is ridiculous, who put them in charge of keeping track.
But for your peace of mind you might want to see your doctor.

Please dont worry about it, I was 15 nearly 16 when i started my periods. It really isnt anything to be ashamed of hun, to be honest I think it can be a good thing.

Heres some info to help...

On the blob
When a girls starts her periods it's often hailed as the first step towards becoming a woman. Monthly bleeding from the vagina first begins during teenage years and continues until a woman is in her forties or fifties.

Periods are caused by changing hormone levels that fluctuate in a regular cycle that controls fertility. This cycle is known as the 'menstrual cycle'. The average length of the menstrual cycle is 28 days, but ranges anywhere between 19 and 37 days.

See what happens during a menstrual cycle.
You will need Flash Player, download it for free.

The menstrual cycle

Day one of the menstrual cycle is marked by the beginning of a period, also known as 'menstruation'. During menstruation, the thick uterus (womb) lining, which built up during the previous menstrual cycle, is released along with blood and mucus. The uterus contracts to force out the old lining.

This can also cause stomach cramps in some women. On average only 40ml of blood are lost during a period, but the amount can be five times more or five times less. Periods last around 5 days.

Blood is released during a period
After menstruation, rising levels of sex hormones trigger an egg to mature in one of the ovaries. Meanwhile, the lining of the uterus prepares to receive an embryo. It becomes at least five times thicker and is filled with blood and mucus.

Half way through the menstrual cycle, a mature egg is released from one of the ovaries. If this egg is fertilised, pregnancy will follow. Fertilisation will only occur if there has been unprotected sex. In most cases, the egg is not fertilised and the menstrual cycle will begin again.

False starts

In many girls, the start of bleeding does not mean that sexual maturity has been reached. Often there will be no egg released for the first month. On the other hand, some girls will release eggs for several months before bleeding occurs.

pms

Pre-Menstrual Syndrome, or pms, is the name for some of the symptoms girls experience in the days leading up to a period. These include breast pain and water retention. A girl might also become irritable and tired, or suffer from nausea and headaches.

More pleasant perhaps is a craving for chocolate and stodgy food. As many as three quarters of women experience some form of pms and it can be worse during teenage years as the menstrual cycle is becoming established.

you will get your period one day, but don't be embarrass not having one.

Why are people, that are not related to you worried about whats going on with your body? its none of their business.

when you get your period your not going to want anyone to know when your on. Your going to hate the way it feels. It only symbolizes that now you can get pregnant.

don't lie!
its no one business to know whats happening between your legs so you don't have to tell anyone. Except your mom.

Hi there sweets, I guess I was one of the lucky ones and started mine at 9!! I hated it! But I can imagine how you feel as my best friend did not start hers until she was 17!.

Im now 25, and its normal for girls not to start theres until late.
Though I would like to suggest one thing. I think that you should make an appointment with the doctor, just for a routine check up, to see if your under/over weight, or you may have a little hormone inblalance.

It would put your heart at ease, and worrying doesn't help also, and i know that its hard not to, but worrying can actually prevent it from happen. Its happened to me loads of times.

You'll be fine hun, get your mum or sister to go the docts with you. x

Stuck in the middle of nowhere
kI'm sure even if your sister wasn't sworn to secrecy she wouldn't put out a bulletin about your period. Just don't mention it again to your friends, but trust me once you get it you will wish you never had it, especially when you start bloating and get killer cramps.

Don't worry! It's not a big deal to lie about your period. Honestly, no one is actually going to know if you have it or not. Just don't bring up the topic of your period when you're talking with your friends. Trust me, they're not worrying about your period, or even thinking about it unless YOU bring it up.

It's not a big deal that your sisters knows. As long as she understands that it's something you want kept private, it's fair that she does just that. Really, she shouldn't be blabbing about your period regardless if you have it or not!

Really, I feel ya. I didn't get mind until a few years after my friends, and I felt so left out. Then I got it, and wished I didn't! I guess that's the story of periods...You're normal and healthy. My best friend didn't get hers until she was 15. Just try not to worry. Pretty soon you'll have it, you won't have to lie, but you'll wish you hadn't gotten it!

Joanna, it's really worrisome if you are 15 and you haven't got your periods. As an OBGYN professional, we frequently come across girls who fail to get periods sometimes upto 16 years. what we do is -
1.take a history : late periods run in some families.,the mother and the sisters having had a late onset of periods.
2. examine the girl for any signs of anemia, malnutrition or systemic diseases- heart disease, kidney and metabolic diseases etc..
3. look to see whether the secondary sexual features are allright--- breast growth, presence axillary and pubic hair etc.
4. if the girl is of average build with normally developing secondary sexual characters, we reassure her and her family ,and advise them to be patient for some more time , and not to worry, since any feelings of anxiety or stress is likely to delay the onset of periods.
5.correction of food habits and oral supplements of iron and protein are recommended. And
6. review after she reaches 16th year.
luckily, with this sympathetic lineof management , many girls start their periods soon. There is no need to falsify the facts and if you feel guilty that you have lied about it, donot worry. your sister and mom will understand your anxiety and forgive you.

It really does not matter that you havn,t started yet its quiet normal for this to be as your body is just gearing up to the things it has to perform.Don,t lie to any body as it is none of their bussines they shouldn,t be asking you anything anyway.

I'm sure you will already know that everyone starts at different ages, and fifteen is not "too late" by medical terms. Have you other signs of puberty? Have your breasts developed and your hips widened? These developments start before your periods will start.

Also, if you are quite small and slim then your periods are more likely to start late.

If you approached a doctor at this point they would probably just measure your weight and height and check that you were not malnourished. If you appeared to be well developed (and have been for a while) then they may monitor you for a while and then eventually do some tests.

Don't worry about starting - you will eventually! As for your sister and lying to your friends, don't worry about it. Your sister is very unlikely to have a sudden change of heart and tell everyone, and it can't actually come up in conversation THAT much surely? If you really hate lying then tell your friends (if you feel you can trust them) - if they are real friends they won't care either way whether you have started your periods or not.

Good luck!

Don't stress too much about it! Everyone matures at different ages. Some girls don't get a period until there 16. consider yourself luck though because they are nothing to brag about. Enjoy not having them while you can.

Its not a big deal that you haven't started your period, its not a big deal at all. Its not like you can control it. If they make fun of you not having one, then they aren't your friends. Trust me, once you get it, you will NOT be happy. its a pain in the ***.

Girls start periods at different ages and it is probably on it's way anytime.

Although it isn't that great when you get them trust me!!!!

Just don't mention your periods to your friends anymore and don't worry you won't be the first and you won't be the last to have told a little lie about something like this.

I know a 15 year old girl who was desparate to start her periods. She's small for her age and very slim, and she just started, so don't worry it will happen when your body is ready. It's nothing to be embarrassed about, just enjoy being free from the hassle right now. Don't lie to people any more or it will make life more awkward for you-if your friends are real friends they won't make you feel bad about not starting yet. After all, it's not your fault!

Don't go out of your way to lie to your friends and you won't feel so bad. You will get them soon enough, and when you start you'll wish you hadn't.

Try not to be so anxious about it, as often, stress and worrying can stop you from having your period.

As for your sister, I'm sure there will be times in her life, where you may have to keep a secret or 2 for her, and it may not seem fair on you. Although if it really bothers you that much, just tell them the truth. Everybody develops at different times and I'm sure they won't think any less of you for it.

Please do not worry it is only a white lie it is not something life threatning or putting anyone in danger or getting them into trouble.
My daughter did the same as she did not start her periods until she was 16 years old and it is normal to start late by the way if you are worried about that.
All her friends had said they had started theirs and she felt bad she had not she later found out some girls had lied and did not start until later it was all to look big.
having periods in normal and natural however a pain every month enjoy your respite of them as you will one day be saying oh not again.
Please do not worry your sister is very good and understanding.

aww, its ok sweetie, I didn't get mine until I was 15 either! Definitely late bloomer! SOME girls get it a 10, others not until much, much later! My own sister was 13, while I was 15, my mom was 13 and my grannie was 15- just like me! When they did start, they were erratic, not on time, sometimes I would miss a month and it would only last for two days! Not until I was 17 that they regulated to almost perfect....two heav y days, one light one and the fourth and last day is spotty. U ARE A OK! p.s I lied too!
