you didnt mention your age? if this is the first time then yes its a sign your period is starting the brownish stuff is old blood and toxins that build up in your system thats gets flushed out during your period.
unfortuantly and fortunatly at the same time im almost 40 and have a messed up cycle. i have one a year if im lucky and the dr tried to regulate it with some horomones i ended up flushing all the stuff out of my system i had brown stuff come out for THREE MONTHS! and i was irritated and sore by then i said enough no more drugs...
the dr explained its all the lining of the walls and old blood that is being flushed out. you will have heavy periods that look like you killed someones you can have light ones that you barely do anything. everyone is different...
tampons are the worst thing to use because it causes the toxins to build up in your system and you get TSS toxic shock syndrome that can be deadly. the stuff that comes out needs to come all the way out and not be held up in by a cotton wad....
some people have cramps some do not some bloat some get headaches and dizziness from the hormones changing during that time....
nothing to worry about..
if you get severely sick and nauseas or you pass clots (big chunks of jelly blood) you need to go see your dr or ob/gyn

Hope the answers below are helpful:
Spotting Blood/Brown Discharge: This may occur when you are ovulating/mid-cycle. Sometimes early in pregnancy you may have spotting or a brownish discharge at the time your period would normally come. If you have spotting at the time of your normal period rather than your usual amount of flow, and you have had sex without using birth control, you should check a pregnancy test.
Brown: May happen right after periods, and is just "cleaning out" your vagina. Old blood looks brown.

It's the beginning.
The dark brown is just because oxygen comes into contact with the fluid, like dried blood.
Periods different for every girl, so this is when you learn what patterns yours will take.
Congradulations, you are becoming a woman.

yaa..i'd say you started your period! its always a little weird the first couple of times.. buy some maxi pads/tampons- whichever you choose- and mark the date when the stains started- it will most likely happen next month around the same time. schedule a gyno appt to if you're more curious. good luck!

Yeah I've heard that when most people start they only have a little blood their first time. That sounds pretty normal >> (about the panties) -My mom gets that too when she gets hers.

Yes I think so, you need to be prepared from now on, cause if you don't you will end up with a surprise one day, and that isn't fun at all. Esp. if you are still in school. I told my mom the first time I started and she told everyone (all of her friends and our family) that made me mad. It was so embrassing for me as a young girl.I cried because I was only eleven years old. So It was a sore subject, even though it is suppose to be normal. I still hate having a period, cause it seems to show up when I am gonna do something fun. But every woman hates them. Good luck to you.

uh, i think you got it.
start wearing a pad to keep your undies clean.
this one should last a few days, and then your period is going to be very irregular for the next year, maybe more, skipping months and lasting for different durations.
