pads are easier to deal with especially if you are still young. tampons the 1st time using one is a little weird at first but you get used to it .. its always a plus so you cant tell that I have a pad on thru my pants..good luck

When I was 15, I was using tampons without issue. I think it really depends on the person. If your friend is comfortable with the tampon then it is a lot more convenient. I think pads are a great starting point for most, but the majority end up using tampons. Tampons are especially good for athletes! I would have never made it cheerleading without them!

I think they could use both. Use tampons when wearing tight fitted clothing, thongs, and bathing suits. Wear pads when wearing light colored clothing, dresses, and skirts. Use your good judgement when choosing what to wear with what.
But if they don't want to wear both, than pads are a definitely good way to go, because you're not at risk for that toxic shock syndrome as you would be wearing tampons (even though its a low possibilitiy). Plus it will let everything flow out freely instead of clogging it up. I noticed when I use tampons and my period is supposed to be over, there will be an extra day or two of minimal spotting from what the tampon has clogged inside. Plus if they are heavy during this time, pads will soak up everything a lot better.
Another piece of advice is, if your friends are worried about the whole virginity thing and using tampons, tell them that you can use tampons wether you are a virgin or not. It won't take their virginity away.

I would say stick with pads for a bit longer as they are easier to work with but she should also ask her mom to see what she says.

I vote pads...
tampons can hurt!
They can be dangerous too...
I only use tampons for swimming&dance.
But its totally up to her...
for the 1st year only use pads just to be on the safe side.
I'm 13...and my 2 BFFs are 14.
One uses pads, the other tampons, and me pads.
It just depends on which she likes better.
Whichever feels better for her.

Really, whatever the person involved is comfortable with. It can take some time to get used to the idea of tampons (not to mention the things themselves). And in the meantime, pads are absolutely fine.
Quick FYI, in case you didn't know: You should never sleep in a tampon, and it's generally considered a bad idea to put one in before your period starts.

It depends on the person and your lifestyle. I only use tampons now, I have since I was 16. Up until then I used pads and I would be miserable during my period....it's not so bad with tampons because it doesn't feel like you're wearing a huge diaper around.... But it's all up to them to decide.
And also, tampons only hurt if you insert them incorrectly.

If she is just starting to get her period she should go with pads until she is used to having a period. There is nothing wrong with using tampons from the get go though. It's simply a matter of "experimenting". What I mean is start with the light flow tampon and see if she is comfortable with it. If so then there is no reason for her not to use tampons. All I use is tamps because I find them much more comfy than a bulky pad. I have never felt comfy with thin pads because I just don't see how they could work so I get paranoid in public. Plus to be practical and blunt there is less odor with tampons VS pads, and the outline of pads can sometimes be seen through your pants.

I think a pad is better for you age. a tampon it sometimes makes you have infections. so i would use a pad instead of fearing that a tampon could get stuck in me and not come out

Personally I think pads are disgusting, and always go for tampons. Once on vacation in a 3rd world country I got it and could only find pads as we were in a rual town - UGH! It was the worst most constrictive 5 days ever. I couldn't even go swimming! what a pain in the a**. Besides the fact that you can feel everything, including the gross pad. Never again!

Menstrual cups. You can use them as a virgin, non-virgin, and a mother. No matter what condition your body is in. They are made out of rubber or surgical silicone and last up to 10 years. They are re-useable and comfortable. I've been using a diva cup for six months now and I wish I would have known about the cup sooner. Do your research and be educated about the choices you have as a woman.

I started on tampons , an If i ever get off the shot I will go back to tampons. To me a pad is just yucky. Atleast with a tampon , it's a bit cleaner !

I prefer tampons but some moms don't want their kids using them until they are older. Weird, I know. It is really a person preference. I think tampons keep you cleaner and they are not so uncomfortable.

It's really a personal choice. Certainly wear tampons when you want to go swimming. Never wear tampons overnight.

I personally use tampons. They are easy to conceal, they work well, and they don't have a leakage risk unless you wait like 10 hours to change it, LOL. I'm fourteen and this whole 'wait til your older' business is crap. I'm fine.

Pads are great for girls who aren't very experienced with their anatomy as they are easy to figure out. Tampons are good for girls who want to get to know about their bodies a little more and to have comfortable protection (Great for athletic girls!). You also forgot to mention menstrual cups! Menstrual cups are great for girls who have had about 2 years of experience with tampons first as the menstrual cups require more knowledge about your anatomy. I highly recommend cups to girls who have had a minimum of 2 years of tampon experience because they're healthier for you, environmentally friendly, cheaper in the long run, and they're more reliable than tampons AND pads both!
Most women don't know this (and it's quite sad...) but tampons/pads contain harmful chemicals like Dioxin, Rayon, and Bleach. Feminine hygeine manufacturers think that we, as women, need white and pure products to consider them clean so they bleach their products white. The problem with this is that Dioxin is produced during the bleaching process and dioxin is potentionally carcinogenic (associated with cancer!). The risk is incredibly higher if you use tampons since they are worn internally. Rayon is also a highly absorbent substance that is derived from wood pulp. Rayon harms the vagina because it's so highly absorbent that it absorbs the natural discharge of the vagina and it also upsets the vagina's natural moisture balance. Menstrual cups don't do this because they are made from 100% hypoallergenic medical-grade silicone (like the DivaCup, Lunette, and MoonCup!). If you want to know more go to their websites or google "livejournal menstrual cup" and a bunch of links pop up. To find out more about the harms of tampons go to the FDA's website. Best of luck!
