A woman has many parts that a man doesn't have. Women get cramps in her back , stomach and her breasts gets very tender. Women, bless their hearts, insides are in front, but affects many areas of their bodies. Just like labor pains, some experience extreme back pain. It is just the way a woman body is made. We ladies even have one more rib than a man. I don't know if this helped any, but I tried.

I think it just adds into the other menstrual pains, like headaches, tommy aches, and foot pains (well for me anyways) I'm 13 but my back also starts aching when it happens, so I usually have to lie down somewhere...

In a word, prostaglandins - they're chemicals a woman's body produces that cause many of the symptoms associated with menstrual discomfort. The tissue that lines the uterus makes these chemicals. Prostaglandins stimulate the uterine muscles to contract. Women who have high levels of prostaglandin experience more intense contractions of their uterus and more pain

I have no idea!! I totally agree with you!! Some women do get back aches as opposed to or along with cramps. It's normal. But, if you are sexually active and your breasts hurt as well then you should probably go take a pregnancy test.

First of all, this is NOT a dumb question. There are many "mysteries" to women's health that many guys are intrigued about. Not understanding the nature of women and their ability to create life are part of the reasons why women were suspected of witchcraft and sorcery centuries ago. If you are ever going to have a serious relationship with a women you'll need to know as much as you can. Good for you for asking!
Here is the answer from: http://medical.justanswer.com/menstruation/g6qg-back-hurt-during-period
During menstruation back pain is most likely due to the position of the uterus in the pelvis. If the uterus is 'tilted' often times back pain will occur during menstruation.
Here is another answer from http://www.funadvice.com/q/extreme_back_pain_during_period:
Back muscle pain can be caused by the same hormonal changes that cause abdominal cramping during the period. Chemicals called prostaglandins are responsible for promoting uterine contractions during menstruation. These same chemicals can cause havoc throughout the body, and especially in the lower back muscles.

Endorphins are neurochemicals that suppress pain and increase the threshold to painful stimuli. Low levels of endorphins may be involved in pms. Scientists have been unable to identify a single cause of pms. Theories range from hormonal and chemical to nutritional and psychological. Women whose mother or sisters have pms are more likely to have it, so there may be a genetic component. A combination of genetic, physiological, and environmental causes are likely.
Hormones and neurochemicals
The physical, emotional, and psychological changes that occur in pms coincide with hormonal changes of the menstrual cycle. pms may be a response to declining levels of estrogen and Progesterone that occur just prior to menstruation. The exact role of the various hormones are not clear. Some neurochemicals (chemicals that help make up the nervous system) also have been implicated. Hormones and neurochemicals may interact to produce pms.
