If it's your first time wearing a tampon (or inserting anything into your vagina) then get smaller, slimer ones because it will go in easier.
Depending on your flow, they can last for 4-8 hours.
BUT if you are going swimming it's better to change your tampon before and after you swim because the water would have absorbed some of the water.
Changing it after you've swam will also supply maxium protection against leakages.
It doesnt hurt the first time you use them, you just feel a little discomfort - but don't worry they will become more comfortable within time.
Taking it out does hurt a little, but not alot.
Also wear a panty liner in your knickers so if you do leak it wont ruin your underwear - but don't wear one swimming !
Have fun at the pool.

omg i went through the same exact thing. get tampax pearl because they slide in the easiest. if it is your first time using tampons it may take awhile to get in but once it is in u will love it. use lites but if ur flow is super heavy use regular. it will hurt to get in for the first time but if u take it out when it is full it shouldnt be too painful. u can leave it in as long as u want when u are in the pool but once u get out u should change it

Umh i guess get the size you get for pads, and tampax is good i think :P . It wont hurt the first time you put it in, but it may feel 'wired', and if it hurts when you take it out, that means you need to leave it in more so it can soak up more. wear them as long as the box says, it should say, but dont leave it for too long cause then you might get a sickness :O

If it's your first time using tampons, I suggest getting ones with a plastic applicator; they're more comfortable to insert than the cardboard or applicatorless ones. When I first tried tampons, the firs one was a bit uncomfortable because I had no idea what angle worked for my body. If you don't get it positioned right the first time, just take it out and try with a new one; you'll soon get the hang of it. There are also instructions in the box to guide you.
As far as absorbency goes, what you need will depend on the heavyness of your flow. Look on the side of the tampon box, there's an absorbency chart to help you determing which absorbency is best for you. Choose the lowest practical absorbency to minimise the risk of toxic shock syndrome (a rare but serious condition associated with tampons).
And yes, you should be fine wearing tampons for up to eight hours, just don't forget to take it out (since they're so comfortable you don't feel them, it's easy to forget :-) ). Hope this helps!

It's a little uncomfortable the first few times but you'll get used to it.
You should probably try regular, or light, depending on how heavy your period is. You can wear them up to 8 hours.
I must warn you if you don't have the tampon in all the way and then you jump in a pool its going to be very uncomfortable. So practice a few times to get the hang of it.

Tampons aren't as scary as everyone makes them out to be. Don't worry! Since it is your first time, I would look for the 'extra slim' kind at the drug store. As for brands, I would suggest 'tampax pearl easy glide' because they have a plastic applicator that is easier to handle. The tampon shouldn't hurt if you put it in the right way. In fact, you shouldn't even be able to feel it. (just make sure you are relaxed.) taking it out is easy enough. Just pull on the string and it should slide right out.
Make sure you don't have it in for more than 8 hours as this could put you at risk for TSS.
When you purchase a box of tampons, there should be more detailed information on inserting it listed in the instructions inside the box.
Good Luck :) :) :)

you just have to try them to figure out what you like. I really like Playtex personally but everyone is different. the size, or absorbancy, depends on whether you have a heavy or light flow, etc. as well as how long you wear them. I recommend buying a small multi-pack the first time (for example with regular, plus, and super or whatever they come in) and then you can just figure out what is best for you. Hope this helps!

I use Playtex Sport...they're very comfortable. For the first time though, I would suggest the slim fit ones. They are very slim, so they won't hurt when you put it in. I would suggest reading the directions on how to insert the tampon, it may take you a few tries, but that's ok!
As for the size, I would suggest get a multi-pack of regulars and supers. Depending on the flow of your period, make a good judgement on which size you need. (Use super if there is a heavy blood flow).
Also, remember to change your tampon every 4-6 hours to avoid TSS. Once you get used to tampons you will recognize when to change it, but for now just don't leave it any longer than that.

playtex sport and tampex are the best brands.
if you are going swimming for 4 or less hours you should use the normal/small size
if you're going for more than that use the next biggest one. i don't really think there's a difference between the sizes they're almost the same.
use the bigger one if it's heavy.
it doesn't hurt.....it just feels very very uncomfortable (not hurting)
ask your mom or a grownup that you trust (girl/woman) to help you if your having trouble.
good luck :)

while sport are great, pearl is all i use. you look on the box to give you a gram measure of what it will hold. so it completely depends on your flow. no its not painful, but note that the higher absorbency the higher your supposed risk of tss (toxic shock syndrome) is. and for any males who have a problem with this, get over it, its why you exsist on this planet. four to eight hours is what the instructions say, however any doctor will tell you four is much healthier.

Ah I still remember this being my first reason
for ever starting to use tampons.
Yes it hurt for me taking it out.
mm a lot. actually. sorry to tell you.
But maybe it'll be different for you.
It was only the first time this happened.
Putting it in didn't hurt. Taking it out did.
For your first time consider the applicators then worry about size.
I would recommend not the cardboard ones you might see
but the plastic round tipped applicators for easier insertion.
Probably Kotex. The BEST brand.
I still prefer these.
Depending on your flow would size vary.
If it's heavy get super ones.
If it's light get the light ones haha.
I've still used tampons since and it's been a couple of years now..
I'll admit to slipping close to 8 hours without taking it out
because of school and everything,
but you really should be changing every 4 hours.
No matter what size or flow you have.
Have fun swimming! Don't let your period hold you back.

Get any kind of plastic tampons cuz they go in easier. The size of tampons u get depends on how heavy ur "flow" is. If u think/feel that u are bleeding a lot, then get either regular or maxi. But since this is your first time with tampons, i would get a box of light or regulars. Lots of tampons sell boxes with 3 different sizes in them. The maximum time u should keep a tampon in before it needs changed is 8 hours. It doesn't hurt when u put them in or take them out as long as u do it right. If u take ur tampon out too early, like when it's still kinda dry, it'll feel uncomfortable, but it won't hurt. Trust me, get tampons with plastic applicators, they're a lot more easier to put in, and they go in nice and easy. Feel free to email if u have any problems/other questions.
OMG DON'T listen to laxlaxlie! Leaving them in all day is dangerous & increases your risk of TSS (which is rare but still), NEVER leave ur tampon in all day! Also, disregard the ppl who r saying "ew" or "go ask ur mom". They're immature.

1. You should start out by using a tampon with a plastic applicater for smoother and easier insertion. Try using a box of playtex Gentle glide slenders. They are made specifically for young teens and beginners so they're extra small - they're only about an inch long and the width of your pinky finger.
2. Tampons don't come in different sizes, but they do come in different absorbencies to match your flow. The standard size to start with is usually a regular absorbency, but if you notice that you're using them up and having to change them really often you can try using a super absorbency for a heavier flow.
3. Tampons should never hurt. You'll know when it's inserted correctly when you can't feel it inside of you at all.
4. Tampons can be worn for up to 8 hours, but you should be changing them more often as needed as long as you don't exceed 8 hours with one tampon. Best of luck!

Up to 8 hours is the longest you should go with a single tampon or you risk TSS. But a tampon will probably fill up by then, depends on your flow.
I've used Platex tampons. Just a tampon iwth a plastic applicator. Best tampon to try is a low absorbancy one so it's thinner when you try to insert it your first time and it's be easier to remove since it will have absorbed fully. But in the future, you want to use one appropriate for your flow.
It takes practice to get it in right. They have diagrams on the box, but the easiest way for it to get in correctly your first couple times is to put on foot on the bathroom counter and one on the floor and insert it or lay down and insert.
Inserting it will be uncomfortable at first. It's an unusual feeling, but you'll get used to it more as you you it more often. If you insert the tampon correctly, you shouldn't feel it. It only hurts getting it out if you take it out before the tampon have absorbed enough. >< That does hurt, so choose a tampon appropriate for your flow and it won't hurt to take out.

i have always used tampax. if youre flow is heavy then use the super but if its just a normal flow use regular. change it when you go to the bathroom, so every 3 hours or so.
and it shouldnt hurt at all. if it does its not in correctly. you shouldnt be able to feel it at all once its in you.

use playtex sport, and get super just in case even tho it sounds like it will hurt there is not that much difference from a regular. and it might hurt a little but you will get used to it. you can leave it in for 8 hours at the most, but no longer or you can get toxic shock

the best tampons to use if you want to do an activity like swimming are the tampon sport, because they give you all around coverage. the size depends on you. you kinda have to play around with it a bit but start with normal so you know to go bigger or smaller the next time. and it doesnt hurt at all the first time trust me. i thought it was going to but you just get your self worked up for nothing. it doesnt hurt it will just feel odd the first time but you cant even feel them. and they last prolly 5-8 hours depending on the flow. but after you swim take it out for safety. dont worry about it

All of these answers depend on your own body.
If you have never gotten them before I would get a multi pack with applicators. (a multi pack is one that has lots of different sizes)
If its the start of your period then i would suggest the light ones (the smallest) if it is during the heaviest time the use the medium ones.
Tampons are designed to be as comfortable as possible. However you may notice that what i just typed may sound laughable the first time you use them. It should feel uncomfortable the first time however FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. and you should be alright.
How long are they good for.....
well this depends on your body again. For the first time using them I would bring a few extra and hide them in your purse or swim bag. They should last 2 hrs easy however it depends on you
so here is a trick
If you are going swimming with friends and you want to make sure you are ok for the entire time. get a waterproof stop watch and set it for about 1hr to 1.5 hrs into your swim. Bring along a vitamin C chew and tell your friend that you gotta go take some antibiotics and you need to get some water. (or use the simple gotta pee excuse) but with the stop watch you wont forget about it.
Also make sure to read about the toxic shock warnings it affects VERY few women however you should be aware. The info is in on the little piece of paper that has the directions on it

ha, im surprised you asked this on the internet. you can get any type you want, they all have the same impact. it all depends on the 'flow' for the size. you can get regular or super. it just depends. for swimming i would just do regular but it can be safer with super also. you can wear them depending on how heavy you are at the time. 4-8 hours is usually the best time. I would get your mom or someone close to help.
Good luck.

If you never have worn them before I would get like the smallest size. slim/slender ones. I would change it every 4 hours or so to see how much flow there is and figure out the longest time you can wear it. As for hurting, yes I guess it kinda does hurt a little, but after awhile you get use to it.

my favorite brand is playtex sport. as far as size think about what pad you would get it pretty much works the same way. Like if you're only wearing a panty liner, where a light tampon, if you're soaking through you're pad it's probably time for a super. And if it's inserted correctly it doesn't hurt at all, but if it's not full when you take it out it may be a little uncomfortable, but it won't hurt. And 4-6 hours would be how long i would leave it in for. Hope I helped you!!!

don't be thrown off by the smart mouth comments.... you kind of have to expect it when you put a question out in a public forum where people can be jerks cause they suddenly grow balls when they can be anonymous. anyway- the bigger the tampon the less you'll have to worry about leaks but bigger tampons also increase your risk of tss- toxic shock syndrome (there is info on it in every box of tampons) tss can be pretty scary but nothing to worry about if you use the tampon correctly. i try to change tampons no more than 6 hours in, i use regulars (cause i think it's a waste to buy a bunch of different kinds) and a liner and change it more often if i have a heavy flow (which liners help with) if you want to go swimming use a super or larger (no liner) and just take it out right when you're done. i don't reccomend using ob tampons your first time- i'd stick to something with a plastic applicator- and make sure to get it in as far as you can. putting it in shouldn't hurt and you shouldn't really feel it while it's in- if you do feel it try pushing it in further with your finger and know for next time to put the applicator to better use.... the only time i've ever had discomfort using a tampon is toward the end of a period when it doesn't have much to soak up so it's a bit dry and pulls or w/e coming out. anyway, if you get it in all the way it will not pop out while you swim so forget what the guy said about respecting other swimmers and you are not breaking any tissue by incerting a tampon so don't be afraid of that- basically disregard anything posted by a male and anything rude posted by a female. just think tons of women have done it before you and tons more will after you- not big deal, just pay attention to what you're doing and how it all works for you and enjoy the freedom of less mess :op
*also try it out before you go swimming just so you know how it is going to feel

Use tampax... Seriusly the best.
It hurts the first time... use a small one and just practice... with a small one... it will go in easier, and then use a bigger one for when u actually need protection/go swimming. It can hurt coming out especially for first timers... but after that it should be fine especially if its fully absorbed. If you get the ones that open up inside of you haha those can hurt alot even if they are absorbed fully and u've been using tampons for a long time.

Personally I use super plus for the first 2-3 days of my period because I have a heavy flow. So it depends how heavy your flow is. For Pearl brand, it says to leave it in no longer than 8 hours. But you should leave it in for at least 4 hours.
The first time I used tampons, I was scared because I heard they hurt but when I finally used one, it was all alright. My friends agree when I say that they aren't uncomfortable. However, if you put one in that is too big (that is more absorbant than you need) it may hurt taking it out. With that, it can be a trial and error and you will know that next time you should either leave it in longer or use a smaller size.
I don't know of a brand that is better than others for swimming, using Pearl works for me.

Get your mom or a trusted female adult to help you. one tip that will really help is that when you put it in, don't go straigh tup, angle it towards the back a little? do u get what Im saying? Go in at an angle. Also, the brtand doesn't matter but make sure they are easy glide .and I'd start with a very small size, the smallest you can find. You might have to change it more often but they're soo much easier your first time if you use small ones.
