Generally if you are not sexually active you don't have a gyno exam. The best advice though should be from your doctor not from us or even your Mom.

"Only girls who have sex need to get a pap smear"... That's not true. The reccomended age is 18, even if you're not sexually active. Exams are not only to check for STDs, it can help detect other things like HPV and cervical cancer. I was terrified too... But a couple months ago I had to get one because I had a urinary Tract Infection... It wasn't as bad as you'd think, and I even had a male doctor. I mean, think of it this way, it's not like you're going to go out to tea with them, and it's not like they're gonna see you in a super market and say "Hows your vagina?" It's over in like 3 minutes, and that's it. :) hopefully you'll get one.

Yeah, all ladies who are over 18 years old or have been sexually active should get a pap smear. Insurance companies cover pap smears.

I have always understood that every woman of childbearing age needs to get a yearly exam. It's important that the doctor check for abnormalities because disease can and does happen to non-sexually active young women. I am sure your mom would rather know you are maintaining your health and well-being by going to a doctor than think you are of loose morals. Why don't you find some info online or ask a GYN for info about why it's important and show that to mom.
When I go for my exam, I only pay a co-pay.

Your mom doesn't sound like a very smart lady...sorry. You should get one, what if something is wrong with you and you could prevent it from getting worse or dying?! Don't be afraid it doesn't hurt...uncomfortable yes, but it is over in seconds! Good luck.

Every woman over 18, whether sexually active or not, should get an anual exam and pap smear. The term "mother knows best" doesn't really apply here....

YOu should go...and you're an adult, so this is none of your moms business. Do some research on the procedure (you can find details online) and if you wish...have a friend go with you. No one from the doctors office will notify your mom...give them your cell number instead of the home phone

usually you should get one when you either start having sex or turn 18, whichever comes first. So you should probably go. they aren't scary or anything. better safe then sorry. It will only cost what your copay is...usually $20.

It is not true that only girls who have sex need pap smears. Not all cervical cancer cases come from sexually transmitted HPV. You are well past the age when you should have started getting annual exams, sexually active or not.

you need to get one even if you haven't been sexually active by age 21, so you're due for one. Just make sure you go to a reputable doctor and you'll be fine.

Its absolutely untrue that only sexually active girls should get a check up. The reason for the pap is not only for std's but to check for cervical cancer which can kill you, so its VERY important to make an appointment As soon as possible. Cervical cancer IS treatable IF found in time!

Yes, especially if you are sexually active. You also should find out your paternal and maternal grandmothers' pertinent medical problems; they shouldn't mind sharing that with you for your health promotion. Also, it would be good to check with your aunts, if they don't mind sharing that information. With this information, your physician would be enabled to care for you more sufficiently. If you have insurance that pays 100%, call your MD's office for a price. I wouldn't be concerned. Get that initial visit.

U R 23 y/o u r your own women...who cares if your mom finds out if you're going to get a pap...a pap isn't just for women who have sex it's preventive for cancers of the ovaries and cervix. In fact you should go get blood work done also at your gen pract. Call a dr in your network and tell them you want a complete annual exam blood work and pap. They will set you up with...it's good to do these things every single year as a women whether you had have sex are currently active or never had sex before.

I am 40 and i'ved just had my smear.I think that if you are sexually active that you mshould it is no reflection on you and it could save your life, i have one every 3 years without fail and it can pick up the first signs of any trouble, do it for yourself, don't listen to what any one other than a person in a medical positon has to say to stop you it doesn't mean you have no morals, it is just good Sense. Good luck.

You need to do this yearly. Even if you are not sexually active. The primary reason for the test is to check for abnormal cervical cells that could become cancerous. Your mother is mis-informed. Please call and make an appointment with a gyn for a well woman exam. This will also include a breast exam. You will be nervous your first time. Try and find a female doctor, that may ease your tension.

Get a pap smear. Don't tell your mother. You're 23 - it's none of her business. You aren't a sl*t just because you are taking care of your health. Nuns can get cervical cancer. If you really want to tell your mother - you can tell her that!

Getting a pap has nothing to do with sexual activity. You should have been getting them done a long time ago. Don't think of it in terms of babies and sex, but as part of your yearly physical. Your mom should know better and if she doesn't, then perhaps you could invite her along so that the dr. could inform her otherwise.

It is very important to have a pap smear yearly even at an early age. A pap smear is used to check your cells to see if they are abnormal or cancerous. I don't believe that it has anything to do with sex at all. I urge you to get it done. It really isn't that bad, it is uncomfortable but not painful. I had abnormal cells show up at the age of 22 and had to have a procedure done to "shave off" the bad cells. Luckily for me it ended up not being cancerous, but if I never did anything about it, it could have gotten worse.

I think if you are having sex then you FOR SURE need to go.. but that doesnt mean you dont need to if you arent sexually active. You should go just to make sure everything is alright and that way you can ask questions .. which every girl has!

Your mother is not informed. Yes, you should be having one yearly. Depending on your insurance type, it may all be covered or you may have to pay a co-pay. Dont be scared, it is not that bad. It basically sucks, but you just have to do it!! You also need to have a breast exam done. Your mom is in the dark ages.

If you are 23 you need to be having annual pap smears. If your insurance covers it 100% what are you waiting for?
You don't need to be scared, but I understand. I still remember the first time I had one. I was terrified, but it isn't bad.
It's a responsible thing to do as a woman. Your mother is wrong and I can't believe as a woman she would tell you such a thing! Do you live with her? Does she pay your insurance? I don't understand why you need her blessing.
If you are a college student and are afraid of your mother finding out, at least look into your college clinic and the services they provide.

You should go have one even if you are not sexually active. Ovarian cancer doesn't really have alot of symptoms and a good physical exam is the best hope for early detection.

Yes, go! Even if you aren't sexually active, cervical cancer can still occur. There are other kinds of cancer that are not caused by HPV. There's nothing to be frightened of. Choose a female doctor if you'd feel more comfortable, and then, please get some brochures to educate your mother., Good luck!

Yup go. Its not only to see if something is wrong but it gives the doctors a baseline to look at when things are right so they can more easily diagnose when something is wrong.
Your mother is grossly misinformed. See above. Further more you dont have to have sex to get cancer, fibroids, cysts, bacterial vaginosis, yeart infections, and so on.
Third, at 23 why would you be discussing your personal health with your mother? I mean I could understand if it was somethign she needs to know but I don't tell my mom when I'm going in for my annual....

Be grownup, take care of your health. Most providers recommend that sexually active women, and women over the age of 21, should get regular exams. Though the risk is greater for sexually active women, it's still important for you to be examined.
Your mom is being old-fashioned and encouraging bad habits. Tell her you want to take responsibility for your health. (Even if you were having sex, it would be none of her business.)
The exam really isn't that bad - doctors are used to people being nervous, so they've learned how to relax you. If you're calm, it will only be uncomfortable, and you'll know you've done the right thing.
You should also be doing monthly breast self-exams. The doctor can teach you how.
