The scariest part is just having someone put tools inside of you, but they will try and make you as comfortable as possible. All you really feel is a little pressure and it's really fast. It may hurt a little that day or the next day, but if it does hurt all it feels like is a mild cramp like a period cramp.

it definitely doesn't "hurt" but it is a little bit uncomfortable. basically the doctor will take a very long q-tip and insert it inside of you to collect a sample, and then pull it out. that's it. 14 is very young to get one though.. unless you are sexually active.

it's not physically painful, there are a few uncomfortable pinches but the main thing is feeling comfortable with your gynecologist. The best part is when its over and you don't have to go back for one year.

I don't know firsthand what it's like, but I've been told that it doesn't hurt, it's just a little bit uncomfortable.
Try reading this, it might give you some information :)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pap_smear
Tell me to mind my own business, but I think that it seems un-necessary for you to have one at your age. I would check with your doctor first to see if it's necessary for you to have one. I'm not a doctor so I don't know what your situation is or anything, it just seems a bit odd

It isn't the most pleasant thing in the world but it VERY important.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pap_smear
Basically you just lay back and think happy thoughts and it is over REALLY quick...
The doctor will look everything over to make sure it all looks normal, then give you a breast exam, then your done.
It DOESN'T HURT... It feels ODD, odd as hell... But it isn't painful like most people say it is to freak you out...
While you are there, get the First shot of the HPV vaccine.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HPV_vaccine
Better to be protected then to take the chance of getting cancer in the future!!
For the test they lay you back, then they take a speculum and insert it into the vaginal opening then take a really long q-tip and rub cells off the cervix (like when you scraped your cheek in science class to view the cells under a microscope) and they check them for cancer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HPV
It is very quick and VERY important!
Get it every 2 years until you are sexually active... Then get it once a year.

Are you sexually active?
Doctor's usually recommend a papsmear every 2 years when you become sexually active.
Depending on how they do your papsmear it may hurt. If you're lucky you can get it done by ear cotton bud, except longer and all they do is take a swipe sample.
I have heard that some papsmears are done by a little rubber thing at the end of it and scrapes the insides abit. Heard that can cause a bit of discomfort.

First of all, your Dr should be making the decision if it's time to get a pap smear. Hopefully, you have a female Dr, and if it's necessary, she will make you more comfortable.
Are you sexually active? Then the speculum they insert will not be as uncomfortable. If you are still a virgin, your vaginal opening is smaller and it might hurt more. Let your Dr. decide if you need to have one done. You're so young and it's not an exam that any woman enjoys. Good luck. Have your mom explain to you WHY she wants this done at your young age.

ok if you are 14 and not sexually active you do not need a pap smear. Nuns who are virgins, do not get cervical cancer, however if your mom insists get it done. It does not hurt although it could be a bit uncomfortable, You may also bleed a bit, so take a sanitary pad with you

Honestly it is not that bad. A little embarassing at first but no need to be nervous doctors perform these exams thousands of time a year and won't be making any judgments. The exam itself is a little uncomfortable (especially if you are tense) but not painful. The whole ordeal is over pretty quick. Like anything else after you've had a few paps done, it won't be that big of a deal. This is VERY important to have done every year as doctors will be screening you for things like cervical cancer and can often spot any small problems before they get out of hand (provided you get checked once a year). My best advice is try hard to relax, it will be over quickly, and bring a panty liner with you just in case because it is very common to experience a little spotting after a pap smear. Welcome to the joys of womanhood!

I was scared to death before I went, not knowing what to expect. it is not at all as bad as i thought. the pap smear thing used to do it looks like a big q-tip, from what i see. the doctor warns you, and it feels like a quick cramp. it doesnt hurt, its just a weird somewhat uncomfortable feeling, but not painful, and before you know it, its done. its build up to be a horrible thing, when in reality, its not so bad and being safe and getting checked is great : )
edit--they're really looking for signs of cervical cancer, not yeast infections. also, since i was scared my first time, i asked to just have a meeting with the doctor to talk about everything and the doctor made me feel much more comfortable and discussed all the options and ideas about being a woman. im sure your doctor will agree since youre young. I went at 17 in order to get birth control for irregular periods

Pap smear is done to prevent cervical cancer since it can easily be detected. So the process goes something like this: you lie down with your feet apart and you try and relax as much as possible, the more relaxed you are the less it hurts. The doctor will insert a plastic thingy that looks like the ones used to help put on shoes, (but there are two) then they will crank them open to create a gap between them. The doctor will then use a scratcher (resemble a brush with plastic bristles only about 5mm at the end of a stick), the brush will lightly scrub your uterus to get the sample. After this the doctor will use their fingers to press from the inside with one clean hand on the outside literally squishing to feel for lumps. There may be a short external vulva exam and then you're done.
You only need a Pap smear if you have your period and are planning on being on the pill or are currently already having sex. Otherwise you can wait!
Overall its not painful, the doctors are sensitive and if you tell them you are nervous, they will take their time and help you relax. Trust me I think there are other things in life that are worse!!
Good luck xx

funny that some ppl dont know what that is lol... but it's no big deal, everyone does it, it's perfectly fine. it will be a-ok when it's over. however, most doctors reccomend having your first one when you are 18 or sexually active.

First of all, if you are under the age of 18 or 19 and aren't sexually active, you do not need a papsmear yet. But if you are sexually active, then yes, a papsmear is recommended. If you use tampons, like the larger kind, I'm sure you will be okay, and it doesn't take very long. It will be a little bit of a shocker your first time getting one of these, and a little uncomfortable, but it's really seriously not that bad. Also, if you are having sex, it won't hurt bad at all.
Good luck! It's not that bad I promise!!

It doesn't hurt and it's really fast. It's a little strange cause you half to be half naked and have a doctor look at your private area. But the doctor just slips something inside you for like three seconds then it's all done. I don't feel anything at all but i've heard some people say it feels like a pinch. Don't worry about it. You wont cry or anything. It doesn't hurt at all.

Ugh, I hate going to the gyno! No woman I know likes it, but it's just something you have to do if you care about your health. It will be a little uncomfortable, but it won't hurt. The doctor always says you will feel "a slight pressure." I'm not gonna lie, it sucks big time but it's for your health, I'm sure it's nothing compared to cervical cancer!

It can be a scary thought going for a papsmear, and I can understand you might be a little nervous but its really nothing to worry about.
You go to your clinic, or doctor, whereever you are having the exam.
They show you the bed and give you a towel to place over yourself and ask you to remove your pants.
Once you are ready they come in with some tools which look a bit scary but they dont hurt a bit.
The doctor/nurse performing the exam puts some lubricant on the speculum which is inserted in, to help hold open the entry to your vagina, It sounds uncomfortable but it shouldnt hurt a bit, at least mine didnt.
then she uses a little tool to take a scraping of cells from inside, which again you cant feel.
The only part that made me jump a bit was when she released the tension on the speculum when she had finished and the spring shut.
I know from at least my first and few after they really havent hurt at all, just more uncomfortable around a stranger if you know what i mean.
