Find something else to do with your hands, pick up a hobby, wet your hand and but baking soda on it, then when you suck your thumb, it is disgusting, also go buy finger-nail polish that tastes digusting because it is for people so they stop biting their nails
Good Luck

Ooooo I have news for you. I know a 21 year old that still does that. You really need to stop. Your teeth are going to be messed up. Put hot sause on it or something you don't like on it then you aren't tempted. This 21 year old I know really looks silly when she does it. Better stop now then later. :) hope this helps.

You should tell your doctor about it. My brother used to always bite his toenails (haha yeah, weird!) and my mom brought him to the doctor. He gave him this thing in a purple bottle if I remember correctly? It just goes on your nail as if you are painting it, and then when you have to urge to start biting your nail, or in your case sucking your thumb, it tastes really bad you take it right out of your mouth. It works though, no lie.
But yeah, I would have your mom consult your doctor about it.

If you really want to stop, you will find a way. there is a saying that goes "when you are full you will push away from the table". Have you tried dipping your thumbs in something spicy? Or clorox? Good Luck.

It can be embarrassing and a horrid habit to break. You could try putting some Tabasco sauce on it . ( when your alone of course) Holding something in your hand like pencil will help too. I Know many adults who have the same problem , my Dad was one. He was able to control in public but if he was truly tired and fell asleep in popped the thumb. It is a habit but one that brings comfort to you. Ignore any nasty answers you may get. I know you'll do fine and break yourself of it in time. Good Luck

Well all of the advice on hot sauce, vanilla, socks and what have you - don't work. You acquire the taste. No matter how bad it is or hot it is......you will get used to it. You need to want to STOP. There is a security reason why you do it. You need to find that reason and then work out the issue. You will eventually stop. Good luck. =)

I sucked my thumb till my 20's...I was on the slow track to stop suckin mine. The only thing you can do is try the other options that others have given you and find out which one works. I started my nails done every two weeks cause that helped me. You just have to find something that works and then you will be able to stop, but dont rush it you are still young and FREAK what others say.

Im 36 and I still chew my lip or my shirt collar, you might just have an oral fixation. Try to replace it with a straw or something I chew those too. But not pens. Gross.

The only way to stop this is willpower. You've got to tell yourself you're too old to do this anymore and "snap out of it!"
I know that sounds harsh but it's the only way. I'm sure hundreds of people your age still suck their thumb, sleep with a teddy, sleep with the light on, etc......... but the only way to stop it is to knuckle down and get on with it!
Good luck!

Tie a ribbon around it.
Or look for Nil-bite. You paint it on your nails and it tastes awful.

that kinda used to happen to me but then my dentist told me that i would get really bad buck-teeth if i kept on going so my mom put tape on my thumb (sticky side out) and dipped my thumb in pepper. that really made me want to stop. you can use other things rather than pepper. just something that you find disgusting.

Wear gloves.
Tie down your hands at night so that you can't put them in your mouth.
Try hot sauce.
They make stuff that tastes nasty just for nail biters and thumb suckers. Can't recall what it's called though.
What stopped me from sucking my thumb was (I was much younger than 15 though) one day I looked at the one I always sucked and then at the other and thought it would never look normal again. I'm been thumbsucking free since then.

Please don't be embarrassed for saying this. I'm very proud of you for being courageous enough to share this with us.
Please talk to your dr about this situation as well, because you could be deficient in certain vitamins or something else is physically going on that could be causing this.

I had the same problem too but I stopped at 12, cause it made me get sick all the time, I started chewing gum all the time, so I buy crates of gum instead of packs...try not to suck on your thumb for more than 21 days and you will eventually stop

I've heard of younger children, like 10 or 11, still sucking their thumb, but not a 15 year old.
I'm sure it is not all that uncommon, though.
If this is the worst of your worries, be glad:)
There are alot worse problems that you could have.
The main issue, besides the social one, is your teeth.
Prolonged thumb-sucking can distort your teeth.
Don't be emabarrased to tell your doctor. That's what he's there for. He may be able to suggest some aversion therapy, and find out if there is an underlying cause.
So, tell your doctor. And remember, it may be embarrasing, but it's not the end of the world,

They sell stuff (can't think of the name) at drugstores to help people who bite their fingernails. It's really horrid tasting, and cured my friend of his habit in just a week. You could ask about such products at the drugstore, then put it on your thumbs. Asking for something to help control nail biting would be a lot less humiliating than admitting the real problem :) Good luck.
