What would cause 6 year old child's hands to peel?
|
six year old's hands just recently started peeling. From fingers down to palms. No pain, no bright red new skin. Was sick about two weeks ago with what appeared to be the flu. Recovered ok. Just nasal congestion remains.

Could be many things. My son who was 4 at the time had something similar. I found out it was simply the SOAP at daycare that his little hands were sensitive too. We fixed that and his hands got better fast.

Hmm my brother use to have this condition when he was younger. I'm not sure if he was 6 though probably 8. We tried Doctors, dermatologists, etc, and they just couldn't figure out what was it. My mom tried a psychiatrist and she found the problem. My brother had some nervous problems that was provoking this condition.
I will recommend taking him to his pediatrician and if he doesn't find out, ill try the psychiatrist, maybe there is something wrong that you can't figure out.
hope this helps.

Some infections can cause this reaction. use should consult their doctor. One I think of off the top of my head is "Scalded skin syndrome" related to a staph infection.

Hmmm, it sounds like it may be Scarlatina to me.
My brother had this when he was young. Mom thought it was the flu/bad cold and then a week or so later his hands started to peel. She talked to a neighbor lady who told her it was Scarlatina.(her kids had had it in the past, she recognized the symptoms).

I think your child is very intelligent and is just playing a trick on you. If you let Elmer's Glue dry on your hands you can peel it off and it looks just like skin. You can't see it after it dries so kids think it's a really cool thing to do to freak out their parents.

If they go to school, it could be the play time the child does at school. Maybe he/she likes to run around and get rough. Or the weather. My hands crack and peel when it is cold..its common.
That's my opinion..

My 6 year old has the same thing. I searched on the net and never found anything. BTW, Hand, foot and mouth disease is not the same as Fifth's disease. He's had both. Those don't sound like it to me. He does have exzema. It's so mild now that he's older though. It could be still some form of that though. He picks at it too. Which could make it worse I guess. He's done the whole glue thing too. It's not the same. I think the facination with the glue came from picking the "real" dead skin. Once his hands cleared up, he started doing that. Weird and gross and soooo boyish. Gotta love 'em. If you are concerned, just take him to the doc or dermatologist. Oh and my other son has had Scarlet Fever and that doesn't seem like it to me either. IMHO, if it's not red or inflamed I wouldn't be too concerned. Try switching soaps and put non perfumed lotions on to keep them moist. Good luck!
