Some scientists currently believe it came from monkeys in Africa b/c some monkeys are carriers of the virus(meaning it doesn't effect them).
It is believed that monkeys have carried the virus for centuries. Now, as u know, population only increases and people only move further and further into animal territory.
Some African tribes eat monkeys and if it's not cooked properly, there is a chance of contracting the virus.
That is the latest belief I heard from my professor who used to be a geneticist.

The earliest known case was a man from the Congo in 1959. In the US, you are correct, there was a teenage boy who died that was positive for HIV infection in 1969. It is quite possible the entry point to the US was Haiti, but it is so convoluted at this point, it is hard to know exactly.
